Guest guest
Dear Kurkowiak Lucas, It is good to learn that you are translating BPHS in french language. But do you know Sanskrit? There are two english translations of BPHS in the market. One by G C Sharma and another by R Santhanam and both are unfortunately 'erroneous' and misleading. Both skipped certain 'key' points. About R Santhanam I am sure he merely translated it from a Hindi translation published from Varanasi. His knowledge of Sanskrit was just 'working' level just as we develop over years by reading Jyotish books many times over. If one looks at BPHS and compares its Sanskrit with that of 'Brihat Jatak' of Varahmihi and Mantrwsar's 'Phaldeepika', one finds its Sanskrit very simple and easier to comprehend. Later authors had started using more difficult meters, leaving simplicity of earlier sages Vasistha, Narad, Parashar. I met Santhanam many times in his Govindpuri house and confronted him with some points. I was writing articles for his magazine and he published many of them. My one article on 'translations of classics' , he did not agree to print in his mag, saying 'I know who inspired you to write all this'. He was alluding to K N Rao. It was not correct. Correct translation of BPHS is possible only when a group of scholars sit together for many months and debate and deliberate over 'key' words. This is going to become possible as the new government has come out with a positive attitude to introduce 'Astrology' as a professional and academic courses in universities. May be if you wait for a while, your translation may be better. You remember, in our email exchange about 16-17 months back, over calculating astakavarga for Rahu and Ketu, I gave you reference of 'Guru Nadi' from an 1984 issue of Astrological Magazine. This point came up again on this list about 1-2 months back. Best wishes, Shiv Chadha I n reply to:- >From : "Kurkowiak Lucas" <larry_golad Reply-To : vedic astrology Subject : [vedic astrology] Varnada and Paryaaya dasa Date : Mon, 03 Sep 2001 10:27:02 Namaste list members, Before giving my queries, I'll introduce myself.
