Some people may think that "chaya" in "upachaya" is "Chhaayaa" meaning shadow (as in "Chhaayaa grahas" - Rahu & Ketu). That's not true. It is just "upachaya" with both a's being short vowels and "ch" being the ch in church. It literally means "growth and accumulation". The word "chaya" means collection and "upa" is a prefix meaning towards, with, near etc. So upachaya means accumulation and growing.
