I am confused. I hv seen the article by Guaranga Das on Upapada. He

did not mention that Upapada = pada of the 2nd house, if the Asc is

Even Sign

Dear Sumeet and Venkat!

Don't get confused.... In all the cases, Upapada is the pada of the 12th

house. This is what specifically taught be Pt. Sanjay Rath.

Dear Venkat, Sumeet and list members,

Currently I read the book "Arudha Systems of Prediction" by C.S.Patel where on

page 55/56 he make reference to BPHS chapter 30 and Jamini (Chaukamba Hindi

Edition) the interpretation is that the Upapada be the 12th in case of an odd

sign and the second in case of an even sign. The issue is focused around the

interpretation of the word "Auchara" which denotes "the house following the

Ascendant at birth". Maybe some members who control Sanskrit can dig into this

?

However, Sanjay Rath in his translation of "Upadesa Sutras" on page 107 (note i)

writes that those views are incorrect and only the 12th house should be taken

into account.

There is certainly some confusion here It will be nice to 'air' this one out

....

Kind regards

/Jay Weiss

JAYA JAGANNATHA!

Dear members,

Namaste.

As the question was addressed to me, I will try to answer, and other

Sanskrit Pandits like Narasimha can add on it.

In the Sagar edition of BPHS (Ch. 32. verse 2-3) the following is given as

the definition of the Upapada:

tanor anucaraadyat syaad upaarudham tadocyate

tadevopapadam naama tathaa gaunapadam smrtam

Tanu Bhava is the first house. The Upapada or Uparudha will be the arudha of

the anucara (the house following the 1st house). This is the 12th house, as

the planets move from the 12th house into the 1st during their regular

motion). Parashara does not make nay mention of switching between the 12th

and 2nd house in case of odd/even signs.

Maharishi Jaimini in his Upadesha Sutras (1.4.1.) writes as follows:

upapadam padam pitranucaraat

Here Sanjayji again translates Upapada as Pada of the 12th house. No mention

of variation acc. to the sing being odd/even or sama/visamapada. It is only

in Neelakantha's commentary that Pitranucharaat is interpreted as 2nd house

for sama or samapada signs, but Sanjayji states that this view is a

misconception.

Also Kalidas in Uttara Kallamrita Kanda I Ch IV. verse 38 writes as follows:

evam rihphagrhaad bhavedupapadam tatraiva saumye tadaa

tajjaayaa hi surupinii gunavatii saa syaacchiranjiivinii

This again points to the Upapada being the Arudha of the 12th house.

I hope that this helps relax the question.

Yours,

Dear Guranga Das and list members,

Thanks for your comments regarding Upapada.

I never doubted that it is the 12th and not the 2nd (using the same references

as you mentioned in your reply).

However it is beyond my understanding how certain 'authors' can take liberty in

implying otherwise, thereby misleading and creating confusion.

In this connection, please allow me a question to anyone who can reply:

In Uttara Kalamrita (Dr. P.S. Sastri), same chapter, in regard to Upapada and

predictions about wives, the text says "Jupiter in or aspecting the 8th from

lagna or a benefic's aspect on it will not cause the death of the first wife.

The conjunction or aspect of benefics like Guru indicates the number of living

wives, their children, their qualifications and other features.

Can anyone explain the second sentence ?

Kind regards

Jay Weiss
