Hi all,

Each sign of the zodiac is assigned a direction. East begins from

Aries, South from Cancer, West from Libra and North from Capricorn.

Does this mean that the junction between Sagittarius and Capricorn

coincides with the Pole Star, which is the absolute north?

Warm regards,

Dear Ramapriya,

Namaste.

I have seen at least a dozeon of different methods of assigning directions

to the Rasis, for Jataka, Prashna and Ashtakavarga as well. The method

mentioned by you is apparently based on the Sun's yearly movement in the

Tropical zodiac, so it does not have so much relevance in Jyotish. The

winter solstice is the time when the Sun is on the southers point in the

zodiac and it crosses the Makara Sankranti line (border between Sag and Cap)

in the Sayana (Tropical) zodiac.

Another way to analyse your statement is liek Parashara gives the South

Indian chart style. The tow signs on the top (Aries and Taurus) will

indicate East (because in Vedic Yantras the upward side indicates East, and

the left side will be North). So the Chara and Sthira Rasis belong to the

four main directions (Cn and Le South, Li and Sc West, Cp and Aq North) and

the dual signs will indicate the secondary direcvtions accordingly.

The pole star does not appear within the Zodiac, because it's closer to the

North Pole, so it will indicate the hub around which the celestial sphere

rotates. And the zodiac is only a belt of that sphere which is situated

above the Equator of the Earth.

However, for practical readings Sanjayji recommended the following system of

distribution of directions: the fiery signs indicate East, the Earthly signs

South, the airy West, and the watery North. Thsi is used in Ashrtakavarga,

but may be used also for other purposes connected with determination of

directions both in Prashna and Jataka.

Dear Gauranga,

Hi! Thanks for a nice reply, but I'm confused again 'cause I got more

than I bargained for not having framed my question properly (typical

non-native English user's problem).

Right now, since I'm still in the stage of formative visualizations,

I'm basically interested in knowing the longitude of the Pole Star so

that I can mentally place it vis-a-vis our zodiac. At a future date,

I'll perhaps ask you why the beginning of Aries was considered the

zero point of the zodiac, etc. Incredibly, none of the basic kinda

books on astro I have gives this information!!

Sagittarius, Aries and Leo are the fiery signs, right? Being non-

contiguous portions of the zodiac but at trines to each other, I

can't comprehend how they can be regarded to be east. But I don't

even want to know the intricacies of it just yet, since I'm certain

things will fall in place once I progress with studies.

For the moment, to save you the time and bother, just a numeric for

an answer will suffice, thank you very much.

Warm regards,

Ramapriya

Om Shree Gurave Namah,

Dear Ramapriya,

Let me see if i can explain this to you.

The pole star is verticaly above the chart, if you want to fix it.

It's not in the plane of the zodiac.

The entire zodiac is around the earth in the East - West Belt.

Imagine yourself standing facing the east.

In the 24 hrs period each sign rises in east for 2 hrs. The lagna

is at the sign rising at the east. all the other signs in reverse

sequence are spread in 30dec arc from East to zenith(top) to west

(back) to bottom.

So the north pole is on your left which is not drawn in the chart.

Hope this helps.

Om Saraswati prana vallbahaya namon namaha

In the 24 hrs period each sign rises in east for 2 hrs for lagna, not exactly 2

hours nearly two hours ,I lagna is 3 hours ...one lagna 2 1/2 hrs...covering 24

hours -12 lagna

is at the sign rising at the east. all the other signs in reverse sequence are

spread in 30dec arc from East to zenith(top) to west nadir(bottom).

earth is not completely round but eliptic forming 360 degrees.....is taken in

to account 12 * 30 degrees =360 degrees

With Best Regards
