Guest guest
JAYA JAGANNATHA! Dear Radhikatma prabhu, Hare Krishna. I will realte to you, what Sanjayji told me in this regard. While using astrological factors for judging compatibility, we look for the following things: 1. Upapada matching 2. Moon matching (Kootas) 3. Chara Karakas matching 4. Navamsha matching 5. Charts overlapping and yogas therefrom 6. Other considerations like longevity, Sahams, and a host of ther factors. In this list the Moon indicates the mind, which is either directed by the three Gunas in case of a conditioed soul or by Krishna's internal potency in case of a liberated soul. There's varying degrees of the two influences depending on the level of advancement of the devotee. The Upapada, however is the Maya or illusion connected with the marriage. This is on the level of false ego (Ahamkara) because a conditioned soul tends to identify himself with his body and bodily relations (wife, children etc.). Therefore we say that Upapada indicates karmic matching. So you see that even philosophically Upapada matching is a higher factor than mental compatibility. In practical terms, if we match any two people with the help of the 12 Kootas, we'll receive quite a high percentage of compatible persons. But if we take this group and assess the Upapada matching, then we'll probably narrow down the circle of applicvants towards those who actually have the karma to meet each other and develop a relationship. This is like if you have a computer and a printer which are compatible according to their parameters. But one of them may be in Japan, and the other in the USA, so maybe they don't have the karma to ever meet and develop a relationship, although in principle they could, because they are compatible. I hope this answers some of the doubts. As for the reasoning that devotional service changes the karma of the individual, let me add a few thoughts. This is certainly true, but if we want to use this argument in these terms, then it would cancel the utility of any astrological proinciples for devotees, so why look upon Moon Nakshatras then at all? After all we are born in a certain Janma Nakshatra also according to our karma. So this argument doesn't establish the supremacy of Moon Kootas over Upapada in chart matching. On the other hand, I would be cautious with saying that Jyotish is irrelevant for sadhakas or practicing devotees, hwen it gives readings wich are true for liberated souls like Srila Prabhupada or Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Saraswati, not only that, but even for Lord Caitanya, Sri Krishna and Sri Rama as well, what to speak then of a sadhaka who may well be under the influence of the modes of nature and his own karma. Also another aspect from Maharaja's arguments: if we had a look at his chart, we would be probably able to ascerttain the factors indicating that he was born with strong spiritual leanings and possibly some Pravrajya and maybe even Moksha yogas, and we'll surely find sings that he would take up the path of Bhakti and preach and initiate disciples, and even accept some portion of their karmas (as I have seen in the charts of several Gurus) and surely there will be combinations that indicate that he would perform Yajnas, like I myself have in my chart and I really do perform them. So Jyotish may tell us many things, and this is actually a divine science, the eye of the Vedas, so we should have the faith that it will show things both on the conditioned and liberated platform. If you just refer back to the fact that it is advised by the GBC to look into the chart of a devotee who aspires to take sannyasa for ascertaining the tendency and success in renunciation, you can see that astrological factors play an important role even at the time when someone is considered to be loberated from all social duties and the influence of the modes, because according to the Sastra this is the suitable position for accepting sannyasa. Please accept my humble obeisances. All glories to Srila Prabhupada. I have a godbrother who usually does compatibility charts for other disciples using only the kuta matching. My Guru Maharaja recently wrote to me the following: "I still wonder how that works (upapada matching) when devotees are improving their karmas by devotional service which wouldn't show up in the charts. So the relevance of karmic compatibility to devotees is what I have a basic doubt it. The birth karma is already being changed by devotional service, but the basic nature of the persons might go through less drastic changes certainly the karma goes through great changes in Krishna consciousness. As a karmi I wouldn't have the karma to perform yajnas for instance. I was a mleccha. But by devotional service I could do yajnas and become abrahmana. How does that match up for karmic considerations? " I would appreciate it very much if you could kindly guide me in answering my Guru Maharaja's query. Dear Radhikatma prabhu, Hare Krishna. - Radhikatma das Gauranga Das Cc: vedic astrology Tuesday, January 15, 2002 10:00 AM Re: upapada doubts Dear Gauranga prabhu, Hare Krishna. Thank you for your guidance. I would humbly like to ask another question on upapada if I may? If there is no upapada match in the rasi chart but if there is a relationship between the navamsa lagnas and the seventh houses therefrom, is that acceptable? Or is it that there has to be an upapada match in D1? If the Kootas are good, the Navamshas are compatible, the Chara Karakas are also good then there is a chance fro a good marriage even if the Upapada matching is weak. I am trying to get married, and have been doing my own compatibility charts. If and when I do anymore, may I submit them to you for checking? Yes, definitely.
