I remember to have come across a mail wherein the significance of this number was explained, but right now, I do not have it with me. Could someone on this list help me in re-understanding the significance of this number 108 please? The answer must be scientific and convincing. Look at Mantra Mahodadih of Mahidhara for more details. The standard one is 108. This can be used by all of us. Let me add a few thoughts on the significance of the number 108 from the Vaishnava point of view. Traditionally there are 108 Upanishads to the 4 Vedas. Also Sri Krishna has 108 main gopis in Vraja and 108 main queens in Dwaraka. So the 108 beads of the japa-mala will represent the 108 gopis who are the best worshippers of Krishna, and the circle of rasa-lila also. The 109. bead is Krishna, who enjoys the service of His devotees. Therefore all mantras, especially Vaishnava mantras should be chanted with devotion, as this is the key to success or mantra-siddhi. The mantra is not something to ouse for my own purposes or self gratification. The mantra is a means to approach Krishna, associate with Him and offer service to Him. So all success in mantra chanting depends on the faith and devotion of the chanter. Also we should not forget the Puranic verdict: ssampradaya vihina ye mantras te nisphala mata, i.e. if the mantra is not received through the parampara form the proper Guru, then it will not yeld its fruits. As for numerological/astrological side, it has been rightly said that the four padas of each of the 27 Nakshatras forn the 108 amsas of the Navamsha chart. Thu Navamsha is the most important Varga and it represents the native's dharma. Also we can arrive at the Navamsha by dividing each of the 12 signs into 9 amsas (9 planets).
