Ya SivaC (do you also use the handle "gnanasivalingam?"):

When I was a child and my mom read stories from Ramayan and

Mahabharat to me, there usually was a reference to the Kings going

for "mrugya" meaning dear hunt or on "shikar" which means going on a

hunt.

Now, if Ram went on a deer hunt, what did his royal staff do with the

deer after it was hunted? There is no mention of what happened to the

deer anywhere, I'm guessing the deer was sent to the royal kitchen

for preparing a feast--now, this is just a guess and my sub-concious

attempt to justify my non-vegeterian diet.

Well, we'll see what the Gurus who've actually studied the scriptures

have to say about this. The Gurus had some profound things to say

about the issues relating to "journey of atman."

Ya SivaC, it's difficult to be a vegeterian in the West, everywhere I

go it's meat, meat, meat. I guess after my wife comes here, she'll

start cooking veg. meals. My mother is repulsed by my non-veg diet,

whenever I go to India, she has separate utensils for me--it's cute.

This june , I had been to India. A Priest had come to do

munj ( thread cerymony) for someone in my relations.

He(the Priest) was a person who had completed his Vedic education in

the traditional way ( in a Gurukulam)

Later on, I was talking to him about astrology ( how to learns it

etc..) and then the topic shifted to Veg/Non-Veg , whether its Ok to

eat eggs just after or before doing sandhya etc..?I told him its

difficult in the US.

At that time, he clearly said that Hinduism does not prohibit

non-vegetarian food. There are many stories in Puranas where God

Himself or great rishis have been said as eating nonveg food.

He also said that there is mention for a non-veg food recepie

in Rigveda!! (I really still cannot believe it.)

He said that when Buddha started Buddhism, hereditary caste system in

India started forming ( before that one could change his caste any

time). At that time, there was a lot of comparison between hinduism

and Buddhism. Both were compared for spirituality. At that time,

the religious leaders in Hinduism said that Hindus will also prefer

vegetarian to show that they have love for non-violence and love for

all life just like Buddhists.

The Priest also said that he considers eating spicy food worse that

eating meat because it affects the mind in a negative way.

Personally I think that no matter what any religion says, Veg food

is always better.

Hence, personally, I respect Pt.Sanjay Rath's view that we should all

be vegetarian. I think this is a very noble minded view because it

shows love and respect for all creatures of God.

Regards,

Sagar.

Dear Siva and others,

It is my suggested that this meat vs. non-meat eating thread be discontinued

because I've seen it happen on other lists where a sincere question sparks an

e-mail war and this is too nice a list to let that happen.

I live in the US and don't have a problem finding vegetarian prepared food. You

can e-mail me privately if you'd like some suggestions.

Best Wishes,

[vedic astrology] To monmuk about Hindus not eating meat.

>I couldn't find any >authoritative scripture that clearly says Hindus can't eat

meat or >drink alcohol.Neither could I. Lot of people suggest that vegetarianism

was a concept introduced into Hinduism due to the influence of Buddism and

jainism. In fact folklore has it that Sages Agastya and Vishwamitra used to eat

non-veg food (but not cow). Isnt there a story of some asura brothers killing

rishis using their non-veg eating habits. The story goes like this - the

younger asura will take the form of a goat and his brother (older asura) will

offer the goat as food for rishis. After rishies consume the goat meat, he will

call for his youngre brother to come out, which he will from the stomach of the

rishi killing the rishi. When they tried that trick on Sage Agastya, it failed,

because Agastya digested the asura in goat form.I have heard many other stories

of Vishwamithra eating meat. I am trying to give up my non veg habits as Guru

Sanjay has asked jyotish students to be vegetarians (it is very difficult if

you live in USA/west and dont cook). Will the jyotish and spiritual Gurus

enlighten us?-Siva (Siva Chinnasamy).PS: Due to people confusing me with other

to the deer anywhere, I'm guessing the deer was sent to the royal kitchen for

preparing a feast--now, this is just a guess and my sub-concious attempt to

justify my non-vegeterian diet.Well, we'll see what the Gurus who've actually

studied the scriptures have to say about this. The Gurus had some profound

things to say about the issues relating to "journey of atman."Ya SivaC, it's

difficult to be a vegeterian in the West, everywhere I go it's meat, meat,

meat. I guess after my wife comes here, she'll start cooking veg. meals. My

mother is repulsed by my non-veg diet, whenever I go to India, she has separate

utensils for me--it's cute.MDvedic astrology, "schinnas"
