Some more thoughts on Ketu...

Hello everyone,

I have usually shied away from posting to the list, but recently

there have been discussions about Ketu.

As in any chart, various factors have to be considered to see how a

certain placement of planets affects the native. The following are by

beliefs / experiences with regard to Ketu.

Some key words for Ketu:

LIBERATION

The Unknown

Darkness

Frustration

Movement

Suddeness

Sting(s)

….

Let us not forget how Rahu and Ketu came about –

*****************************************

A Demon. Disguised, wanting to drink ambrosia for immortality ("amrit

ras") was recognized by the Moon. Just when the Demon put the nectar

to its lips, Lord Vishnu, the Preserver, in the Hindu Trinity, cut

off its head. This led to two parts of one – Ketu being the headless

body.

*****************************************

Because of its headless nature, Ketu is always seeking direction. It

is looking for liberation. This causes a lot of movement. It oftens

causes frustration.

Ketu causes a void, or an absence. In trying to gain for itself, it

is taking from where it is.

Ketu, being a shadowy planet ("Chaya Graha") was a demon outcaste by

the Gods. Ketu has no form, and thus has to adapt to the house it

visits. Consider Ketu acting like Mars now, and like Venus next year,

when moving into Libra ("Tula").

Picture the scenario:

It is a warm sunny day, and you are at a traffic intersection, about

to cross the road. The Sun is behind you, and your shadow is in front

of you. It takes the shape of the road. A car stops now. Your shadow

is on the car – part on the ground, and part on the vehicle. You

cross the road and enter a garden. Your shadow hits the hedges, and

the shape adapts to he surroundings…… similar to water…. Ketu has to

adapt.

1 Interesting combination = Mars + Ketu = Fire + Smoke. Examine the

last time these planets were together, and see what happened. So,

just as other planets influence each other, a planet with Ketu also

has an effect on it. Or each other.

A shadow is comfortable in the darkness. Hence, many consider it

exalted in Scorpio (Vrischik), now. Darkness is usually associated

with this constellation.

The Dragon (Demon) Ketu, has a tail at the end of the body. This has

a sting. So, as Ketu leaves a certain house, it usually causes a

final setback, or sting related to the house. Look back in your

charts to see the time Ketu was moving after its usual 18months. How

this this affect you?

Ketu in a House will cause "Ketu-related" events / sensations to that

house. Ketu in 7th, may lead to an emptiness in relationships, or

unfulfilling partnerships. Ketu in 10th may lead to several changes

in career or the pathways one chooses in life. The reader could use

their imagination – one could go on.

Ketu in 5th will give a void or feeling of emptiness related to 5th

house matters. A child may feel creativity lost. A young man may feel

an emptiness in romance. There could be detachment from a child, for

a parent. What stage of life you're in, and what Dashs you are

running will also have a bearing on this.

Regarding children – don't forget Jupiter, the natural significator

for progeny. Don't forget the ruler of the 5th. Don't forget Argalas,

and don't forget divisional charts. Don't forget your spouse's /

partner's chart, for it takes 2 to create 1. Don't go solely on this

posting, or the posting of others – use your own discretion and

experiences as well.

I not only have Ketu in the 5th, but am running my Ketu Dasha based

on the Vimshottari Dasha System.

Ketu has caused a lot of frustration, left me under illusions, caused

a mot of movement (across states), and caused sudden unexpected

incidents. I have been passive, and have submitted to the stars, to

live in harmony. However, the end results have always been

liberating, an "eye-opener" of sorts, and I consider myself blessed.

It is all temporary. A certain phase, of sorts. At the same time, I

am taking remedies to ease the suffering.

Light defeats darkness. Jupiter will work against Ketu. Think of

other reasons – they are there.

I hope some of this helps give a better understanding of Ketu. There

is a lot for me to learn, and some of the concepts mentioned, are

simply an awareness, and not something I have been able see in

charts, as I have not been able to go into charts as much as I would

like to.

Questions or criticism are always welcome.

Best wishes and warm regards,

Nitin.

Dear Nitin,

Thanks for your insights on Ketu. I must say that this mail gets into my

learners archive. It was very valuable for a learner like me.

A question on Ketu and the Moon. Btw, I have Ketu and the Moon together in the

5th (in Leo). As per the story, I would assume Ketu has a grudge on the Moon

and hence they are not necessarily bosom pals! What is the impact of a

Ketu/Moon conjunction - of course, implied is also the drishti from Rahu on

Moon ?

Would appreciate yours and others thoughts on this.

Kind regards

more confusions too..... so they r here...

1. perhaps for the first time i heard of ketu's sting. hmmmm... analysing my

own chart it looks it do has some say on it. but does that mean after every 18

months u get a sting related to a particular house? and does everytime this

sting is bad? well... sometimes stings cure too. but what about ketu's sting?

2. how to judge the remedy for ketu? whats the basis of jupiter being saviour in

ketu dasa? i m too running ketu MD (ketu in 4th with sat®), and well..... i

myself think i m getting impossible in every phase (courtesey KAY :-) ). 3. i

read in COVA deb. nodes give rajyoga. now..... does this yoga gives effect in

the dashas of both the nodes or there is some hidden trick to analyse for a

peculiar node.

4. somewhere i read placing dhwaja i.e. ketu (flag) on any temple is the remedy.

whats the basis of this? does this refer to getting head to headless?

Gurus and learned members are requested to plz guide.

Nisha

Dear SS,

I rather like your actual name instead of this Ketu's influences.

Please read my comments below, which I could not ignore.

Ketu, of course headless, means no disire. Significater of Moksha, some thing

completely away from Time & Space. So no exist or ever exists (don't know

until realize it). This is the only and single goal of atma which we called

liberation or Vimukthi. Some say Nibbana and some say God, depending on their

language and culture. Natural karaka for Atma is Sun and, that is why Sun is

enjoying in Aries where Asvini is, Ketu's place.

It is only the Moon (Mana or Mind) is the most terrible barrier to moksha as we

have to control this all and every desires to reach there. That is why little

Ganesh cursed moon, as Moon obstructed Ganeshji's enjoyment with those sweets.

Now see degrees of Ketu and Moon. Is Moon liberated or not ??

Hope this will help you.

Thanks

Karu

Would appreciate yours and others thoughts on this.

Kind regards

Dear Nisha,

My thoughts / observations are below…..

1. perhaps for the first time i heard of ketu's sting. hmmmm...

that mean after every 18 months u get a sting related to a particular

house? and does everytime this sting is bad? well... sometimes stings

cure too. but what about ketu's sting?

[Via NK]

Sometimes we hardly notice a sting, similar to the prick of a needle.

Just as a syringe can carry medicine to the body, Ketu's sting may be

beneficial. "Good" or "Bad" are relative terms, and I try to avoid

them.

2. how to judge the remedy for ketu? whats the basis of jupiter being

saviour in ketu dasa? i m too running ketu MD (ketu in 4th with sat

®), and well..... i myself think i m getting impossible in every

phase (courtesey KAY :-) ).

[Via NK]

Jupiter, the planet of Wisdon, maturity and LIGHT helps defeat

darkness. He is hard to mold, as he has taken great form and

established himself. He is confident, and knows his path. He helps

somewhere i read placing dhwaja i.e. ketu (flag) on any temple is the

remedy. whats the basis of this? does this refer to getting head to

[Via NK]

There are several creative remedies recommended by Astrologers,

depending on the chart, and the receptivity of the native.

Appease Ketu, or strengthen Jupiter. There are various ways of doing

this.

Do volunteer work on Thursdays (for the aged).

Wear Yellow for luck and light (Jupiter).

Avoid dark colors for KetuRecite Mantras for Ketu or JupiterWear

Pokhraj (Yellow sapphire) or appropriate stones for the planets.

One could go on.

Om Krishna Guru

Dear Nitin,

I cannot imagine life without my stay with maternal grandmother. Her

enlightening Buddhist rituals and myths and daily temple visits, while I was

taught calligraphy by my grandfather with the bamboo brush during my Ketu

years. (Almost babe in arms until the age of 6), when we flew back to our

parents.

My recollections of the myths are those formative years that I now try and

piece together.

Best wishes, Swee

[vedic astrology] Re: Some more thoughts on Ketu...

Dear Nisha,

My thoughts / observations are below.....

1. perhaps for the first time i heard of ketu's sting. hmmmm...

analysing my own chart it looks it do has some say on it. but does

that mean after every 18 months u get a sting related to a particular

house? and does everytime this sting is bad? well... sometimes stings

cure too. but what about ketu's sting?

He helps

choose options and pathways. Jupiter, just like others can also be

stressful to natives, depending on the Charts and the Dashas.

However, he is generally worshipped to looked upon to ease the

influence of Ketu.

[vedic astrology] Some more thoughts on Ketu...Hello everyone, I have usually

shied away from posting to the list, but recently there have been discussions

about Ketu. As in any chart, various factors have to be considered to see how a

certain placement of planets affects the native. The following are by beliefs /

experiences with regard to Ketu. Some key words for Ketu:LIBERATION The Unknown

Darkness Frustration Movement Suddeness Sting(s)….Let us not forget how Rahu and

Ketu came about – *****************************************A Demon. Disguised,

wanting to drink ambrosia for immortality ("amrit ras") was recognized by the

Moon. Just when the Demon put the nectar to its lips, Lord Vishnu, the

Preserver, in the Hindu Trinity, cut off its head. This led to two parts of one

– Ketu being the headless body. *****************************************Because

of its headless nature, Ketu is always seeking direction. It is looking for

liberation. This causes a lot of movement. It oftens causes frustration. Ketu

causes a void, or an absence. In trying to gain for itself, it is taking from

where it is.Ketu, being a shadowy planet ("Chaya Graha") was a demon outcaste

by the Gods. Ketu has no form, and thus has to adapt to the house it visits.

Consider Ketu acting like Mars now, and like Venus next year, when moving into

Libra ("Tula"). Picture the scenario:It is a warm sunny day, and you are at a

traffic intersection, about to cross the road. The Sun is behind you, and your

shadow is in front of you. It takes the shape of the road. A car stops now.

Your shadow is on the car – part on the ground, and part on the vehicle. You

cross the road and enter a garden. Your shadow hits the hedges, and the shape

adapts to he surroundings…… similar to water…. Ketu has to adapt. 1 Interesting

combination = Mars + Ketu = Fire + Smoke. Examine the last time these planets

were together, and see what happened. So, just as other planets influence each

other, a planet with Ketu also has an effect on it. Or each other. A shadow is

comfortable in the darkness. Hence, many consider it exalted in Scorpio

(Vrischik), now. Darkness is usually associated with this constellation. The

Dragon (Demon) Ketu, has a tail at the end of the body. This has a sting. So,

as Ketu leaves a certain house, it usually causes a final setback, or sting

related to the house. Look back in your charts to see the time Ketu was moving

after its usual 18months. How this this affect you?Ketu in a House will cause

"Ketu-related" events / sensations to that house. Ketu in 7th, may lead to an

emptiness in relationships, or unfulfilling partnerships. Ketu in 10th may lead

to several changes in career or the pathways one chooses in life. The reader

could use their imagination – one could go on. Ketu in 5th will give a void or

feeling of emptiness related to 5th house matters. A child may feel creativity

lost. A young man may feel an emptiness in romance. There could be detachment

from a child, for a parent. What stage of life you're in, and what Dashs you

are running will also have a bearing on this. Regarding children – don't forget

Jupiter, the natural significator for progeny. Don't forget the ruler of the

5th. Don't forget Argalas, and don't forget divisional charts. Don't forget

your spouse's / partner's chart, for it takes 2 to create 1. Don't go solely on

this posting, or the posting of others – use your own discretion and experiences

as well. I not only have Ketu in the 5th, but am running my Ketu Dasha based on

the Vimshottari Dasha System.Ketu has caused a lot of frustration, left me

under illusions, caused a mot of movement (across states), and caused sudden

unexpected incidents. I have been passive, and have submitted to the stars, to

live in harmony. However, the end results have always been liberating, an

"eye-opener" of sorts, and I consider myself blessed. It is all temporary. A

certain phase, of sorts. At the same time, I am taking remedies to ease the

suffering. Light defeats darkness. Jupiter will work against Ketu. Think of

other reasons – they are there. Some more articles on

I hope some of this helps give a better understanding of Ketu. There is a lot

for me to learn, and some of the concepts mentioned, are simply an awareness,

and not something I have been able see in charts, as I have not been able to go

into charts as much as I would like to. Questions or criticism are always

till now i was refraining from writing in detail, b'coz of my laziness. nitin

rightly quoted the story of amrit -manthan, which most astrologers qoute 2

understand nodes. but they miss some vital points.

1) rahu drank amrit , after drinking he was more than satisfied. amrit is

something after which u r not interested in anything else. but the lower

portion ketu remained craving for amrit. i think thats another reason why rahu

and not ketu is regarded as param parmatansh planet

2) since ketu craves for amrit ( which makes u free from bondages), it is

regarded as mokshakaraka, the node which will produce craving for immortality,

salvation( the soul is immortal, but one needs to seek the truth), or

liberation. 3) since it wants , longs or craves , ...the house in which it is

posited it will produce attachment to significations pertaining to that

particular house.( i know many people wont like the word attachment being used

in context 2 ketu. ) but plz first check in horoscope, ke in 1house

-ambition

2house- attached 2 family

3 - attached 2 younger brother( next 2 him)

4- attached 2 mother

......& so on that is why ke in 9 make one seek spirituality & religion.....and

ke in 12 means seeking moksha ( only if aspected by benefics)

the degree of bondage will depend on strengh of house and its lord. if it very

strong , u 'll come out of it , as it is more likely to give positive results.

for ex. ketu in strong 11 house will mke one run after money , but he will get

it if it(the house) is strong. similaly , one can extend this to planets

also.position of ketu from respective planets... or if some planet is severely

afflicted with ketu , check its general significations and lordship.

this theory was taught 2 me by mohan bhai of gujarat, i have tried and tested

it on almost every horoscope with cent percent accuracy.

to several changes in career or the pathways one chooses in life. The reader

could use their imagination – one could go on.

Rahu/Ketu:http://www.goravani.com/lessons/Ketu.htmlhttp://.org/lessons/drishti.htm

I hope some of this helps give a better understanding of Ketu. There is a lot

for me to learn, and some of the concepts mentioned, are simply an awareness,

and not something I have been able see in charts, as I have not been able to go

into charts as much as I would like to. Questions or criticism are always

welcome. Best wishes and warm regards,Nitin.astro2 (AT) justnitin (DOT) comArchives:

Hi Prashant,

I know of at least 2 charts with ketu in 9th. One is an atheist, the other is

I know a couple with ketu in 11th. They do not really chase after money at all.

Re: [vedic astrology] Some more thoughts on Ketu...

hi all till now i was refraining from writing in detail, b'coz of my laziness.

nitin rightly quoted the story of amrit -manthan, which most astrologers qoute

2 understand nodes. but they miss some vital points. 1) rahu drank amrit ,

after drinking he was more than satisfied. amrit is something after which u r

not interested in anything else. but the lower portion ketu remained craving

for amrit. i think thats another reason why rahu and not ketu is regarded as

param parmatansh planet 2) since ketu craves for amrit ( which makes u free

from bondages), it is regarded as mokshakaraka, the node which will produce

craving for immortality, salvation( the soul is immortal, but one needs to seek

the truth), or liberation. 3) since it wants , longs or craves , ...the house

in which it is posited it will produce attachment to significations pertaining

to that particular house.( i know many people wont like the word attachment

being used in context 2 ketu. ) but plz first check in horoscope, ke in

1house -ambition 2house- attached 2 family 3 - attached 2 younger brother( next

2 him) 4- attached 2 mother .....& so on that is why ke in 9 make one seek

spirituality & religion.....and ke in 12 means seeking moksha ( only if

aspected by benefics) the degree of bondage will depend on strengh of house and

its lord. if it very strong , u 'll come out of it , as it is more likely to

give positive results. for ex. ketu in strong 11 house will mke one run after

money , but he will get it if it(the house) is strong. similaly , one can

extend this to planets also.position of ketu from respective planets... or if

some planet is severely afflicted with ketu , check its general significations

and lordship. this theory was taught 2 me by mohan bhai of gujarat, i have

tried and tested it on almost every horoscope with cent percent accuracy.

Many thanks for this. This email is a cooling, refreshing antidote -- from a

true, "accomplishment-relinquishing" sadhaka -- to the kind of 'spiritual

materialism'* which sometimes crops up in Jyotish circles.

My hat is again off to you.

Warmly,

Jesse

*Here I borrow unabashedly a term for grasping for enlightenment or liberation

that was coined circa 1970 by Chögyam Trungpa Rinpoche.

In a message dated 11/1/2002 1:49:49 PM Eastern Standard Time, srath (AT) srath (DOT) com writes:

Dear Prashant,

According to this theory, Ketu never got to drink the amrit and Rahu alone drank

it - in that case, how is Ketu among the immortal lights? Why was it considered

a navagraha?

Another point: Ketu does not crave for liberation. Craving or desire is the

cause of bondage and Ketu teaches us how to stop craving and become humble and

happy, to lose ahamkara. Craving for liberation is yet another desire, and such

a desire can cause rebirth. Kenopanishad explains this vividly. It is a strange

catch 22 situation where the path is best attained by stopping all desires,

including a desire for the path itself or the end result of the path. It is

like being in a stage where there is no desire left. It teaches us to 'have

action without fruits or without any attachment for what the outcome shall be'.

Perhaps you could consider reviewing that list in this light as a desire is

nothing but one of the heads (10 heads in all) of Rahu. It is Rahu that causes

craving. These two nodes or points of the zodiac are poles apart.

Sanjay Rath

Hare Rama Krishna!

Dear Sanjay,

>>Kenopanishad explains this vividly. It is a strange

catch 22 situation where the path is best attained by

stopping all desires, including a desire for the path

itself or the end result of the path. It is like being

in a stage where there is no desire left. It teaches

attachment for what the outcome shall be'.<<

You are quite right Sanjay. This is exactly what

Bhagwan (Sri Krishna) has taught us in His Gita.

There should be no desire left. The Chapter and the

verse I will quote in a followup mail (I remember it

as Verse 11 - Chapter ?? - This I will quote - In

fact, in this verse, the Lord has spoken of the

renunciation in a reverse order as compared to His

teachings in the initial Capters on Dharma & Karma

Yoga - In this verse He says that even the desire for

Moksha should not be there - the context of His speach

is renunciation of the fruits of Dharma, in which he

classifies the expectation of Mukti from

Sadhana/Meditation/Penance too is a limiting factor so

far as Moksha is concerned. This is what He calls

absolute surrender wherein He alone is the focus.).

Initially, this verse was quite confusing, but when I

heard a lecture on Bhagawad Gita, this was quite clear

to understand.

The underlying importance in all this is "Thinking" or

the "Jaagrta Avastha" wherein our Dhis Shakti is in

constant use and in an awakened state. This is when

supreme intelligence is at its best opening all the

locked doors for us. Hard to achieve this state

though, but we must keep striving.

Regards,

Sarat.

Hello,

I have Ketu in Taurus in 9th house along with Mars. I used to be

very religious, but am now mostly agnostic. I'm still searching

for the right path! I also don't get along well with my father.

Hello

I think onw has to judge the influences Ketu is under. That is very

important. Saturn Ketu is a atheist, iconoclast. Guru Ketu is a

dharmik. Sukr Ketu is a fighter. Mars Ketu is not a fighter but a

winner too. Experince makes me say so

i also have an example of sat - ke , ....person is very spiritual & is a deep

thinker. about ve - ke i have seen person initialy runs after women , later may

become a celibate. a few days before when mars- venus was discussed , this point

had come out that ma-ve conjunction may give hard core celibacy depending upon

the functional nature & strength which is a matter of research but there r some

live examples of this fact & those cannot be ignored. prashant
