Dear Denis,

Let me take a pot shot (pun incidental :)) at this.

I guess you should look at the 4th from lagna in D-16 and look for some kind of

a connection with that house of Jupiter (karaka for good food), Venus (karaka

for the fine things in life) and the UL (since you're looking for partner's

influence). Why the 4th house and not the 2nd house? Because though the 2nd

stands for nourishment, it could be wholesome but not gourmet fare. The 4th

house, though, is the natural connoisseur house.

Dear Denis,

It would also be a good idea to look at the second house of the native to see

what type of food they like. It could be possible that their spouse was a

wonderful cook and if the food wasn't appreciated would that be the fault of

the person cooking?

Just a thought.

Dear Denis,

Very intersting question. Befor answering this can we be sure whether

we know how to see whether the native is a good cook or not from his

horoscope.

If I think what it requires to be a good cook, the things which come to

my mind are

1. The skills of cooking shall be controlled by the 3rd house.

2. The planets who are involved in cooking will be

a. Mars- the planet ruling dexterity

b. Moon- The feeder

c. Jupiter- The planet which keeps us alive, because it is the Jiva.

I guess the 3rd house from karaka of food Moon, can show cooking. If

the 3rd lord is fortified then the person will be good in cooking. The

kind of food the person would like to cook will be shown by the planets

having argala and aspects on the 3rd house. I would guess Jupiter would

be more to do with keeping us alive than anything to do particularly

with food

I am not involving Mars as of now. Because I don't think that all the

good cook should have a fortified Mars, however a good sholdier should

have it. :-)

This is only a logical guess. I would like the good cooks in the list

to verify. If this works, we can see how can we see the same thing for

the spouse.

Dear Sarajit & others,

Sorry I'm not sending her chart as I do not have JHL, but maybe some gourmet

Great going Sarajit,

You've got it bang on ! She does cook spicy food !

Now that a few more charts are available to us on the list, I guess we

should analyse all of them and see the Common Factors between them. What say

?

Dear Saraji ji,

You are correct and I want to add some more to this. The Karaka for day to

eatable foods is Chandra whose position is important. Also the house for cooking

or kitchen work for preparing day to day eatable foods is 4th house and it

should be strong along with 3rd house.

So in the given chart ,Chandra is placed in 3rd in the house owned by Surya who

is in Lagna who himself is 3rd lord and also 3rd from Chandra is lorded by

Shukra who is in his own place of Vrishabha and 4th from Chandra is lorde by

Kuja who is with Surya in Lagna and all of these considered to be strong. Also

when we consider from 4th house from Lagna whose lord Budha is retrograde which

made him strong and is in 2nd house of taste with Ketu and Budha is in the

nakshatra of Pushyami ruled by Shani who is in 4th which indicates the person

is really a good cook in spicy foods.

I hope this clears doubts on Cook .

With best regards,

Ramadas Rao.

Jaya Jagannath,

Dear Mr. Deepak,

Thank you for promptly supplying with a real life case, where I can test,

whether my guess holds any ground or not. In the horoscope, Moon is placed

in Leo and the 3rd house from it is Libra. The lord is placed in its own

house in Taurus with Jupiter, which causes its functional exaltation,

rendering it very strong. So it shows the she is a good cook.

Now the kind of food she prepares are to be seen from the Argala on the lord

Venus. Sun and Mars are having argala on Venus. Does she likes to cook spicy

food?

I am attaching the chart for ready reference.

Best wishes

Sarajit

Om Namo Narayanaya,

Dear Sarajit,

I cannot agree. I think as Visti, that Mangal should be strong as ruler of

Agni Tatwa. Even in Vastu Shastra, the Ashtak Varga of Mangal is looked for

to determine the direction of Kitchen. Mangal should be lined to 2nd house

of food. Karak is Shukra while Chandra is naturally exalted in 2nd sign.

Who can else prepere better meal for children from Chandra? I do not see

your reson why Mangal should rule dexterity. I think it is Budha.

Best wishes

Zoran

Jaya Jagannath

Dear Denis,

Very intersting question. Befor answering this can we be sure whether we know

how to see whether the native is a good cook or not from his horoscope.

If I think what it requires to be a good cook, the things which come to my mind are

1. The skills of cooking shall be controlled by the 3rd house.

2. The planets who are involved in cooking will be a. Mars- the planet ruling dexterity

b. Moon- The feeder

c. Jupiter- The planet which keeps us alive, because it is the Jiva.

I guess the 3rd house from karaka of food Moon, can show cooking. If the 3rd

lord is fortified then the person will be good in cooking. The kind of food the

person would like to cook will be shown by the planets having argala and aspects

on the 3rd house. I would guess Jupiter would be more to do with keeping us

alive than anything to do particularly with food

I am not involving Mars as of now. Because I don't think that all the good cook

should have a fortified Mars, however a good sholdier should have it. :-)

This is only a logical guess. I would like the good cooks in the list to verify.

If this works, we can see how can we see the same thing for the spouse.

Dear Denis,

I dunno what the others are looking for, but Mars is the karaka for

cooking, and a strong Mars in trines to the 7th house in Navamsa will ensure

that your Wife is very able in dealing with fire. Also check the same from

Upapada and the 7th lord.

Best wishes

Visti

D-16 has to do with pleasure among other things so that would be a

It would be much easier if there is an example, if possible.

Also, is there any specific reason that D-16 should be taken instead of Navamsa

Thanks.

Re: [vedic astrology] good cook

Dear Denis,

Let me take a pot shot (pun incidental :)) at this.

I guess you should look at the 4th from lagna in D-16 and look

for some kind of a connection with that house of Jupiter (karaka for good food),

Venus (karaka for the fine things in life) and the UL (since you're looking for

partner's influence). Why the 4th house and not the 2nd house? Because though

the 2nd stands for nourishment, it could be wholesome but not gourmet fare. The

4th house, though, is the natural connoisseur house.

Dear Denis,

Considering Visti's and Zoran's answers, I think one should look for a link

between Mars, Moon and Venus since they all rule important facets of the

cooking chain.

I still stick to 4H in D-16 as the place to look for, for this link. D-9 isn't

wholly convincing, because good food is something pleasurable, which D-16 alone

provides pointers to.

Dear Sarajit,

Why does Venus continue to get ignored in your scheme of things? She's the

[vedic astrology] Re: good cook

Jaya Jagannath,

Dear Zoran,

Placement of the Kitchen is one thing and Skill in cooking is another. This is

the same way, worshipping (Jupiter) is different from place of Worship (Sun).

Now I have taken Moon (you also said that) for the one who feeds and the 3rd

from it for the skill of that person who feeds.

Now with dexterity, I mean the use of Hands and 3rd is the house of hands and

rules all the skills which require the use of Hands, mars being the Karaka,

gives the skill to use the hands. Did you mean something else with dexterity.

Om Namo Narayanaya,Dear Sarajit,I cannot agree. I think as Visti, that Mangal

should be strong as ruler of Agni Tatwa. Even in Vastu Shastra, the Ashtak

Varga of Mangal is looked for to determine the direction of Kitchen. Mangal

should be lined to 2nd house of food. Karak is Shukra while Chandra is

naturally exalted in 2nd sign. Who can else prepere better meal for children

from Chandra? I do not see your reson why Mangal should rule dexterity. I

think it is Budha.Best wishesZoran

Dear Denis,

I dunno what the others are looking for, but Mars is the karaka for cooking, and

a strong Mars in trines to the 7th house in Navamsa will ensure that your Wife

is very able in dealing with fire. Also check the same from Upapada and the 7th

lord.

Best wishes

D-16 has to do with pleasure among other things so that would be a good place to

look. Plus the Navamsa deals with a great deal more than just our spouse.

It would be much easier if there is an example, if possible. Also, is there any

specific reason that D-16 should be taken instead of Navamsa (generaly accepted

Thanks.

Re: [vedic astrology] good cook

Dear Denis,

Let me take a pot shot (pun incidental :)) at this.

Om Namo Narayanaya,

Yes I agree with the statement below. The point is that for cooking a

fire is used, so we cannot in any way ignore Agni Tatwa by means of

which a food is prepered unless some special diets using raw food.

First, we should differenetiate a few points:

1. Cook as a profession (where service is imployed) where Agni Tatwa

must be strongly present

2. A good cook? What is a good cook? is it a satwic wholesome food, or

exotic food.? This is all the relative. Some people may find eating

locust, frogs, or even Monkey brain a speciall dessert, while I will not

eat it on the price of starving to death:) So the good cook, must be

skilled in dealing with food(cutting, cleaing etc) and finding a proper

way to deal with Agni Tatwa to prepare the food. In case strong shukra

is present than there will be good taste to enjoy the food, or make it

look nice and balanced. Yet for the point of balancing Rasas (GURU)

Chandra must be properly related since chandra holds exaltation sign of guru

3. Second house in RASHI KUNDHALI indicates a food we intake . Rashi

signifies body, so we take food to satisfy the urge of body and sustain

it. So there is no question of including divisional charts. Lord of 2nd

sign of Kal Purush is Vrishab, so Shukra is natural ruler. Karak is

Guru, while Chandra is exalted in Vrishaba. So these grahas indicate

intake of food. Mangal and Surya is agni tatwa, while Chandra being

sustaining graha (mother) will indicate skills in caring and sustaining

body by food and water. I can agree with a 3rd house by means of skills,

and in Prashna scriptures I have seen 3rd house indicating vessels,

plates etc. However, I still do think that 2nd house must be related to

preparing food primarily

4. For dexterity I mean the same as you. You state that Mars is karaka

which is ok, yet Budha is natural ruler of gemini (3rd house in kal

purush), and budha signifies hands. So I would assign dexterity to budha

first, and Mars secondly.

Best wishes

Jaya Jagannath,

Namaste Zoran,

I hope, this mail was addressed to me. I don't disagree with you that

Cooking doesnot require agni tattva and for the same reason Kitchen is

placed in the direction shown by the sign having highest astakavarga

bindu in Mars's Asktakavarga.

You have emphasised on the 2nd house and I have emphasised on the

Karaka Moon, So I am not very different from your way of understanding.

Now having taken the karaka of food, which aspects we are seeing. The

skills required to cook the food. I still think that the Agni Tattva is

not a strict necessity of becoming a good cook. The mothers (Moon) and

wives (Venus) who are more Jala Tattva than Agni tattvas are usually

good cooks.

Now what I mean by good cook. This can have cultural connotation. Thus

I would think one who can cook delicious food among his own community

can be considered. For me, the best italian cook may not make a

palatable dish for me.

I have taken third from Moon not because I see vessels etc from the 3rd

but the Skill (3rd) needed for cooking (providing food- Moon)- thus 3rd

from Moon.

Wrt to the karakatva of dexterity, I think there is a serious

difference between us. The highest dexterity required in weilding

weapons are better shown by Mars... this is where I am concerened with

use of Hands. Yes, if we take the 3rd as the house of Communication,

then Mercury can become a significator. Not with use of Hands, Mercury

contend for the significatorship.

Best Regards

Sarajit

Om Namo Narayanaya,

I will look in my data basa to see professional cooks.

At the moment I have remembered two persons both vrischik Lagna with

10th lord surya in 6th in

exaltation , yet I will need to find exact data. Interesting point about

vrischik Lagna?

We shall discuss it later in practical charts

Regarding dexterity, Mangal is indeed important for thouse activities

where physical strength is needed.

Otherwise, I cannot agree, since as you mention weapons, surya indicates

skills in light weapons such

as knife. I told you that I agree that mangal is important, yet to me as

a secondary influence. Budha relates

to sculpotrs, drawers etc, where precise hand is needed.

We can discuss further in practical charts

Best wishes

Namaskar Sarajit and Zoran,

Would you mind if I join you ?

Perhaps I am wrong, but don't you think if agni tatwa to be dominant for create

good cooks, the Ruchaka Maha Purusha yoga people will be the best cooks.? But

Maharishi classified those as Jyotish and Mantrikas. My understanding, Agni

tatwa is for strong "Chakshu" or eye for seeing beyond the limit of organs and

who process knowledge, or energy to see occultism, which is third eye- Ishwara.

Mainly taste (of course quality as well) may be the final out come of good cook

and Rasa is Jala tatwa presented by Venus. How ever predominant Jala tatwa

doesn't indicate good cook, but feeder, (Moon and 4th house) hand skills (3rd

and Karaka Mars) may be the factors for good cooks.

Also, I prefer Aruda lagna for maya of taste, which only fulfills our belly and

mind for short time of period.

Look forward for your comments and thank you.

Karu

SRI RAMA RAMA RAMAETI

Dear Sarajitji,

I am sorry that you might have seen a different chart

and the conditions which you mentioned did not tally

at all. In D1 of the native, moon is in Cancer(own

house) and 3rd lord is mercury(lagna lord) conjoined

with Mars in Sagittarius being in the 2nd house from

Venus and Sun(in Scorpio). In d9 of course 3rd lord

from Moon(in Capricorn) is Jupiter placed along with

Venus in 12th from Moon(Sagittarius). I am again

furnishing the birth data of the native.

Dob 01.12.1950 tob 01.25.15 am 79E08 13N13 5.30 east

of GMT.

The native learnt cooking(only vegetarian in

traditional Karnataka style) on his own at a later age

when both parents were not alive.

Another point is that ancient mythology quotes two

persons of Unbeatable cooks and even today the saying

goes “NALA BHEEMA PAKAM(GRAVY)”. Nala was a famous

king and saturnanian influence made him leave the

kingdom and turns as cook. The second person is none

other than Beema(brother of Yudisthira in Mahabharat)

who along with his brothers disguised themselves in

the last year of their exile in the kingdom of Virat

and there Bheema under the name of VALALA become cook.

The two are said to be the masters of cooking. If any

one arrive at the Chart of Bheema, I feel the correct

picture comes out.

With regards,

Vasu.

Jaya Jagannath

Dear Vasu

Thanks for this case. The combinations which are

present in the horoscopes

of cooks, supporting my arguements shouldn't be there

in the horoscopes of

those who are not good cook. This only shows the

statistical significance of

the combinations which I proposed.

Now in the following horoscope, the 3rd lord from the

Moon is Jupiter, who

is debilitated in Aquarius. I would think that the

person is not a good

cook. As the 3rd lord is debilitated, it would show

that he would lack the

skills of cooking, however he wouldn't cook that

horrible as Venus and Merc

conjoining. There is no other affliction to Jup. Moon

is causing the

neechabhanga of Jup, probably in the presence of

Mother, the native cooks

pretty well.

Moon is present in Mars's nakshatra, should show a

good cook as per others.

The 2nd house is empty and lorded by Mars should also

show that the native

is a good cook. Lets see whether they are!

This is a serious test to the combinations, which I

think should show good

cook. I am waiting for the response.

Regards

Sarajit

Re: [vedic astrology] Re: good cook

Om Namo Narayanaya,Dear Sarajit,I cannot agree. I think as Visti, that Mangal

should be strong as ruler of Agni Tatwa. Even in Vastu Shastra, the Ashtak

Varga of Mangal is looked for to determine the direction of Kitchen. Mangal

should be lined to 2nd house of food. Karak is Shukra while Chandra is

naturally exalted in 2nd sign. Who can else prepere better meal for children

from Chandra? I do not see your reson why Mangal should rule dexterity. I

think it is Budha.Best wishesZoran

Dear Denis,

I dunno what the others are looking for, but Mars is the karaka for cooking, and

a strong Mars in trines to the 7th house in Navamsa will ensure that your Wife

is very able in dealing with fire. Also check the same from Upapada and the 7th

lord.

Best wishes

Visti

Dear Denis,

D-16 has to do with pleasure among other things so that would be a good place to

look. Plus the Navamsa deals with a great deal more than just our spouse.

It would be much easier if there is an example, if possible. Also, is there any

specific reason that D-16 should be taken instead of Navamsa (generaly accepted

as chart regarding spouse) ?

Thanks.

Re: [vedic astrology] good cook

Dear Denis,

Let me take a pot shot (pun incidental :)) at this.

Jaya Jagannath

Dear Shiv, Ramdas, Prashant and others,

Lets say how the principles work in this chart

Mercury is well placed in Lagna in the house of Saturn. The argala of

atleast 5 planets show the variety in the cooking styles. Out of all Saturn

is the most influencial one as Mercury is placed in Sat's house.

Lagna is again not Scorpio and neither of the Lagna or Moon is placed in

Mars's sign. Mars is no way related to 2nd house too.

Best Wishes

Sarajit

Dear Rama,

This is because, I take food is more of a matter of sustenence than a matter of

luxury. What you say could be correct. Show me how to use it in finding out

culiniary skills. D-16 is more to do with vehicles and such materials of

luxury. Apply your principle on the charts and show that they work too.

Otherwise I am having some problem associating Cooking to D-16. Frankly

speaking I would put it in the Hora chart rather, the chart of sustenance.

Dear Sarajit,

Why does Venus continue to get ignored in your scheme of things? She's the

epitome of fineries in life, isn't it, unless you don't consider cooking a fine

art?

Re: [vedic astrology] Re: good cook

Om Namo Narayanaya,Dear Sarajit,I cannot agree. I think as Visti, that Mangal

should be strong as ruler of Agni Tatwa. Even in Vastu Shastra, the Ashtak

Varga of Mangal is looked for to determine the direction of Kitchen. Mangal

should be lined to 2nd house of food. Karak is Shukra while Chandra is

naturally exalted in 2nd sign. Who can else prepere better meal for children

from Chandra? I do not see your reson why Mangal should rule dexterity. I

think it is Budha.Best wishesZoran

Dear Vasuji,

Yup I was wrong with the birth date. I reversed the date and month. Now it

makes lot of sense. Placement of the 3rd lord Merc in Sagittarius in Lagna

Kendra is wonderful. However the planets which are influencing it are Rahu

(by argala) and Mars by conjunction. However, it is nicer to see that Sat

and Ketu are breaking the malefic argala of Rahu.

Here, Saturn is breaking the malefic argala of Rahu (the food can never be

tamasik sort) and Mars being in conjunction in Jupiterian house, show

cooking of sattvick food.

Btw we need not look at the Navamsa for these combinations. If this is some

kind of yoga dhana/ raja/ pravrajya etc., then yes Navamsa is important to

see the strength of the planets giving the yogas. No need of cheking the

combinations independently therein.

Dear Sarajit,

My best wishes on Mahashivratri. I had missed this post and today

went through all of them.

Your rule is very interesting and I found that in the chart of one

friend who is a good cook. The jhd data is: -

8

9

1971

4.000000

-5.300000

-80.540000

26.500000

0.000000

Thats Aug 9 1971, 4.00 am, Agra.

3rd from moon is Aries. Ma is exalted and retro in the 7th house.

Moon has unobstructed argala on it from the 8th. She is specially

famous for making exceptional kheer (a dish made by milk, rice and

sugar as the basic ingredients).. :-) This is really amazing.

But I could not find what was the final conclusion. and what kind of

food does saturn represent? I thought I will ask here before asking

my sister what kind of food she really loves to make.

Best Regards,

Shiv

cook. Now the nature of food she cooksis shown by the argala on the 3rd lord

from Moon. Moon and Jupiter arehaving primary argala... Now we need not have

anything to disbelieve whenyou said she cooks Payasam very well. The taste of

Saturn is astringest (Kasaila in Hindi). However here I wouldmean something

which take very elaboration preparation and long time incooking based on the

nature of Saturn. Now saturn also rules cold productssuch as Ice Cream. When we

take this along with the Argala of Moon andJupiter, this can indeed mean that

she is good in preparing Ice-cream too.Best RegardsSarajit----- Original
