Dear Swee,

Jaya Jagannath.

I know next to nothing about gems but can share some preliminaries

with you. Of the gems you enquire of, one source says, Bhishmakmani

is quartz, Pulaka is garnet, Karkatena is Ortho clase Feldspar, lapis

is rajavarta. Topaz is pushparaag. Pushparaag is different from

padmaraag. Probably your guess is correct becuase the description of

padmaraag in the garuda puran fits in with yours:rubies, sapphires

etc. Padmaraag is described as having a variety of hues ranging from

blood, red lotuses, vermillion and sometimes even a mixture of blood

and blue. Some of them have the colour of the eyes of the koel and

the sarus birds (go figure that one!). Pushparaag is undoubtedly

topaz although reading the description I cannot help but come to the

conclusion that pushparaag, padmaraag and indraneel all belong to the

sapphire family. Indraneel is described everywhere as the blue

sapphire and probably pushparaag is yellow sapphire, for the garuda

clearly says that these three gems belong to the same family. So

rather than topaz I kind of feel that yellow sapphire is being

referred to with respect to pushparaag.

Karkatena is said to come in many colours: blood, honey, mango,

yellow, golden/fiery, blue and white. What stone do you think it is?

Shishupal, along with glass, sphatik and girikaach are descrbed as

variants of vaidurjya or cat's eye. Shishpal is described as being

extremely light. I can't figure out lapis, possibly it could be

something called vidrum mani. As far as I know, lapis is blue...does

it come in other colours as well?

Dear Swee,

I can give you the references for rajavarta, but unfortunately they

are in Bengali. If you still want them, I would be only too happy to

give them to you. In one of the astrological sources, sphatik is

written to be quartz and the bhishmakmani as rock crystal. In

GP,vaidurya is described in 1.73, Indraneel in 1.72, karkatena in

1.75, vidrum in 1.80 and rudhirakhya in 1.78.

Best regards,

Sarbani

dear. Going through it over and over, for crystal, it probability of the

meaning is that, gemstones from any other group of crystals. If you notice,

there is one particular line that says: The stone is hard. Obsidian (Glass) has

the hardness of 6, and they are classified as spurious crystals. The other one

which I identified that loses its colour to air, is from the spodumene family.

Suitable Gems-Swee

Dear Swee,

"Courier New";color:black">

I can give you the references for rajavarta, but unfortunately they

are in Bengali. If you still want them, I would be only too happy to

give them to you. In one of the astrological sources, sphatik is

written to be quartz and the bhishmakmani as rock crystal. In

GP,vaidurya is described in 1.73, Indraneel in 1.72, karkatena in

1.75, vidrum in 1.80 and rudhirakhya in 1.78.
