He advocates against the use of the index finger for gems. In fact, he says the finger shouldn't even touch the rudraksh beeja in case you're using that maala for japas. The finger is s'posed to stand for man's ahamkara. Iirc, yellow sapphires must be prescribed on the ring finger. After reading VRA, I've been using my index finger only while gesturing with people.
