Dear List Members,

I have a source that gives the following names for the 8 different

Bhadra Karanas, but not which of the Bhadra Karanas each name refers to.

Anyone have any info on that, whould be much appreciated:

Trishira

Hansi

Sumukhi

Nandini

Raudramukhi

Karalika

Chaturmukhi

Vaikriti

Also, does anyone have any information on the planetary lords of the

four fixed karanas?

Thank you,

Ernst Wilhelm

SARVAM GYANANANDAMAYAM JAGAT

AUM GURUBYO NAMAH

Dear Ernst,

The 7th movable karan/karna is called as vishti karna/bhadra karana. Bhadra

prevails during 1st half of 8th and 15th thithis of Bright half and 7th & 14th

thithis of dark half and 2nd half of 4th & 11th of bright half and 3rd & 10th

thithis of dark half of all the lunar months.

As per mythology(hindu) Bhadra devi was born from body of the Lord Shiva to kill

daityas. After the death of daityas she resided in the ear of Lord Shiva and

decorated the same. Some of the works prescribed during bhadra karana are

arresting, tying, administering poison, igniting fire, use of weapons, tearing

or cutting an object.

Bhadra karana is very inauspicious for the natives living on earth when Bhadra

devi resides on earth when the moon is in cancer, leo, aquarius and pisces.

To overcome the evil effects of bhadra karana prayers to lord Shiva & Goddess

Parvathi is advised.

Bhadra resides in the 8 directions on different thithis. It stays in one

direction for about 3.5 thithis starting at the full moon from south-east

direction and moves in anti clock direction.

Nocturnal Bhadra is called vrischaki and non-nocturnal is called as sarpini.

According to ratnakosh names of bhadra for all the 8 directions are :

Nocturnal bhadra/vrischaki bhadra: 3rd dark half(direction ruled - North east) -

karalika 7th dark half (south)- raudramukhi 10th dark half (northwest)- vaikriti

and 14th dark half(east) - chaturmukhi

Non-nocturnal/sarpini bhadra:- 4th bright half (west)- trishira 8th bright

half(south east) - hansi 11th bright half(north) - sumukhi and 15th bright half

(south west)- nandini.

The tutelary deities/lords for the four fixed karanas are:

Shakuni karana - Kali Chatushpad karana - Rudra Naga karana - Naga and

Kinstughna karana - Marut.

Hope the above will be sufficient and useful.

Astrologically yours,

psramanrayanan
