Dear Rani,

My answers follows your questions-raindancer_1998 <raindancer_1998 > wrote:

dear listmembers and respected gurujis, can someone please enlighten me about

the exact method of fasting on upapada days? I am fasting (as per Visti's

instructions) today (thursday) but I have a few questions for clarification. 1)

Do I chant a mantra for Guru? if so, what do I chant?

Sudharsan- You may chant OM KRISHNA GURU (3X 108 times) 2) I do not have a

rudraksha. could I just chant the mantra without it?

Sudharsan - Not a problem, just wash your hands and feet and count on finger

tips. A shower would be better.3) here in canada, the sun does not go down till

later on at night.

Sudharsan-Locate a website for the local official sunset time and break your

fast with very light satvic food.

Do I stay on the fast until 9pm or so, or can I break it at 6pm (usually the

time in India when the sun sets). Sudharsan-Answered above. Always observe

fasts based on your current location.

4) is there anything at all I can eat or drink other than water?

Sudharsan- The best is to abstain from solids but if you must fruits are ok.The

most important thing during a fast is your consciousness, so try to be

God-concious during the fast.Try listening to some devotional music and

lectures. You can try www.sudarshana.org and www.indiadivine.com .

Dear Rani,

Best Wishes for Fasting...

When you do UL fasting, you usually fast on the day of the lord of

the Upapada and pray/propitiate to the lord of the second from UL.

Sicne you are fasting on Thursday, i guess your UL is in either

Sagitarious or Pieces, depending on which it is you would pray to

either Saturn (Koormavataar) or Mars (Nrsimhavataar). (It would be

best to ask Visti ji to suggest the actual Mantra, or someone who

looked at your chart).

Usually, Gurus prescribe to chant the mantra 108 times, (With or with

out Rudraksha - using it will be helpful for counting) after sunset,

and finish your fast. Then taking Sattwic food

Generally it is suggested to wait till SunSet. But you can close your

fast at 6.pm LMT (In much higher latitudes, obviously Sun doesn't set

for days - so LMT is widely used for these purposes)

If it is difficult to fast, i would suggest eating couple of fruits

during the day or a glass of milk or so. Afterall, health is

important, you don't want to get into more problems trying to ward

off some others :-)

Best Regards,

-Suresh.

Dear Sureshji,

Thank you so much for responding! and I am so sorry, I forgot to

attach a chart. January 19, 1964; 18:33 IST, Calcutta, India.

My upapada is in pisces with Jupiter and moon in it. So 2nd from UL

is Aries and Mars is in 7th in Capricorn with Sun and Saturn. there

are no planets in the 2nd from UL. but Mars aspects that house.

I seem to remember, isn't there a website I can find the mantra to

worship Nrsimhavataar?

thank you again for answering my question! I will have a cup of

milk. :)

It is good to chant mantra for Guru, since you fast on Guru's day.

Otherwise, you may chant mantra for

Devata of 2nd lord of Upapada in femal form (if you are male) and

vice-versa.
