Dear friends,

1)With reasons please let me know if one should have temple at home in any

form like a temple on house premises/separate room/a corner of a

room/cupboard/kitchen(depending on the size of the house) .

2)If yes, should one have photos of various deities or should it be idols(if

idols of what size should they be) or symbols like shivalinga/saligram etc?

3)If possible,advantages/disadvantages of having and not having a temple at home

for spiritual growth.

Thanks and with regards,

Jagmeet

P.S.Personally I am coming round to not having a temple at home. At least one

can avoid the deity curses on self /family and descendents. Just go and pray at

the various religious places without asking or hoping for gains of any kind will

go further in all round positive growth.

Dear Jagmeet ji,

Scriptures advise that a person who is in the Grahstha Asharama (family life)

should have deities (not pictures). This strengthens the devotional service of

the person and the home becomes a temple.Do not worry about curses when you can

offer some simple service to the Deities (choose sattvic deities) and avoid

actions that you will not do in a temple. So if you have Deities and lead your

life around them you will be blissful.

Dear Jagmeetji,

One should not have a temple inside house. But one can have a Pooja or prayer

room in the North-East side of the house. You can have photos of Gods pasted in

sucha way that God's faces are facing towards west and while you are praying

your face to be on east . If you want to keep an idol in your Pooja Room, then

it should not be more than 1.5 inches height. The Agama Tantra ie., principles

for installation of deities in temples say that if anybody keeps an idol of

more than 1.5 inches height, then it should be offered Pooja and Nivedya as per

certain rules of Agama Tantra. So it is better to have idols of 1 inch size in

Pooja Room.

Now you can have Shaligram or Shiva Linga in your Pooja room and you can pray

..But even the Shiva Linga should not be more than 1.5 inch size.

I hope this helps you.

SARVAM GYANANANDAMAYAM JAGAT

AUM GURUBYO NAMAH

Dear Members,

The purpose of temple, idols and pictures of gods and godesses is to help/enable

the AK to surrender. Instead if it helps to boost/strengthen the AK then the

purpose is defeated. When we start saying that i have a temple in my home it

only means that the 'I' has established itself firmly and that it is happy

about its possessions(my home/my temple). If the temple/idols/pictures at home

helps the AK to identify its source then nothing can be construed to be wrong.

To have the picture of the Guru and Ishta Devatha can really help the AK to

surrender. For those upasakas who have developed intense prem bhava like a

Mother carrying for a child then idols can be very helpful. It is like Devaki's

devotion to Lord Krishna. When Krishna was with Yashodha she used to feed &

dress up the idol/doll of Krishna and she used get out of that act, that

happiness which Yashoda was able to derive.

Those upasakas who worship devathas with an intention to harm others, to get

material benefits then idol worship inside the house is forbidden.

Panchayuthana puja at home is recommended as it helps in realising the

importance of pancha tatwas and its merger.

What is more important is the size of the AK/"I" rather than the size of the

temple/idols. The place where AK is offered as Neivedya to the Ishta devatha is

in real sense a temple/aalaya.

Best wishes.
