GANDANTHA - Confusion regarding degrees.

Dear Ramdas Ji

 

Thanks regarding this informative mail regarding

Gandantha.Definition ,remedies and exceptions were very detail in

nature and new info.

 

But regarding the degrees i am now very confused with different

opinions.

 

I will put down my understanding as follows.

Ghatis is a measure of time and hence should be constant.It is with

respect to the movement of the Earth.Earth Takes 24 siderial hours

or 60 ghatis to make 360 degrees or one full zodiac.

 

Thus 360 degrees = 24 hrs; also 24 hours = 60 ghatis

Thus equating, 360 degrees = 60 ghatis and hence 1 ghati = 6

degrees.

 

also as 360 degrees = 24 hrs , 1 degree = 4 minutes of time

 

Thus considering all these 1 ghati = 6*4 = 24 minutes of time.

 

LAGNA Gandantha

---------------

Now for lagna Gandantha as per your defintion half ghatis has to be

considered on either side of Jala and Agni Tatwa Rashis.Then it is 3

degrees of arc on both sides.This is reasonable as it is almost one

pada.

As per my calculation done on 30 minutes of time mentioned by Visti

Ji it goes to 7.5 degrees on both sides.Here the speed of zodiac i

believe is the speed of Earth(Because change of ascendant happens in

a period of 2 hours.)

In this case i believe 7.5 degrees is very high as it spans across 2

padas.Thus Visti Ji could kindly correct me if i am wrong.

 

Nakshathra Gandantha

--------------------

Here again definiton of Ghati remains the same.Thus if moon covers

approximately one nakshathra/day.The speed of moon is 13.2

degrees/24 hours which gives 0.55 degrees or 33 minutes(.55*60) of

arc per hour.

Thus as per your defintion if we have to consider 2 ghatis(48

minutes) on both sides for nakshathra gandantha it should be within

(48/60 * 33)minutes of arc ie 26.4 minutes which is less than half a

degree of longitude.Which is a very small portion of a pada.

So kindly confirm on this.My calculations could be wrong as well.

Dear Pradeep,

The

calculations you have made are correct, the data used however is different.

Ramadas has accurately quoted Parasara

regarding the Ghati’s to be used, whilst my

source is from other Rishi’s, whom my Guru has

gathered information from. For sake of following Parasara,

please use the Timespans given by Ramadas,

as they are derived from Parasara’s Hora Shastra – Gandantajaatashantyadhyaaya.

Either way, its clear that the span of 1 pada,

certainly does not add up with the timespan given.

Thus equating, 360 degrees = 60 ghatis and

hence 1 ghati = 6

degrees.

also as 360 degrees = 24 hrs , 1 degree = 4

minutes of time

Thus considering all these 1 ghati = 6*4 = 24

minutes of time.

LAGNA Gandantha

---------------

Now for lagna Gandantha as per your defintion half

ghatis has to be

considered on either side of Jala and Agni Tatwa

Rashis.Then it is 3

degrees of arc on both sides.This is reasonable as

it is almost one

pada.

As per my calculation done on 30 minutes of time

mentioned by Visti

Ji it goes to 7.5 degrees on both sides.Here the

speed of zodiac i

believe is the speed of Earth(Because change of

ascendant happens in

a period of 2 hours.)

In this case i believe 7.5 degrees is very high as

it spans across 2

padas.Thus Visti Ji could kindly correct me if i

am wrong.

Nakshathra Gandantha

--------------------

Here again definiton of Ghati remains the

same.Thus if moon covers

approximately one nakshathra/day.The speed of moon

is 13.2

degrees/24 hours which gives 0.55 degrees or 33

minutes(.55*60) of

arc per hour.

Thus as per your defintion if we have to

consider 2 ghatis(48

minutes) on both sides for nakshathra gandantha it

should be within

(48/60 * 33)minutes of arc ie 26.4 minutes which

is less than half a

degree of longitude.Which is a very small portion

of a pada.

So kindly confirm on this.My calculations could be

wrong as well.

Dear Pradeep,

The calculations you have made are correct, the data used however is different.

Ramadas has accurately quoted Parasara regarding the Ghati’s to be used, whilst

my source is from other Rishi’s, whom my Guru has gathered information from. For

sake of following Parasara, please use the Timespans given by Ramadas, as they

are derived from Parasara’s Hora Shastra – Gandantajaatashantyadhyaaya.

Either way, its clear that the span of 1 pada, certainly does not add up with the timespan given.

Dear Ramdas JiThanks regarding this informative mail regarding

Gandantha.Definition ,remedies and exceptions were very detail in nature and

new info.But regarding the degrees i am now very confused with different

opinions.I will put down my understanding as follows.Ghatis is a measure of

time and hence should be constant.It is with respect to the movement of the

Earth.Earth Takes 24 siderial hours

or 60 ghatis to make 360 degrees or one full zodiac.Thus 360 degrees = 24 hrs;

also 24 hours = 60 ghatisThus equating, 360 degrees = 60 ghatis and hence 1

ghati = 6 degrees.also as 360 degrees = 24 hrs , 1 degree = 4 minutes of

timeThus considering all these 1 ghati = 6*4 = 24 minutes of time. LAGNA

Gandantha---------------Now for lagna Gandantha as per your defintion half

ghatis has to be considered on either side of Jala and Agni Tatwa Rashis.Then

it is 3 degrees of arc on

both sides.This is reasonable as it is almost one pada.As per my calculation

done on 30 minutes of time mentioned by Visti Ji it goes to 7.5 degrees on both

sides.Here the speed of zodiac i believe is the speed of Earth(Because change of

ascendant happens in a period of 2 hours.)In this case i believe 7.5 degrees is

very high as it spans across 2 padas.Thus Visti Ji could kindly correct me if i

am wrong.Nakshathra Gandantha--------------------Here again definiton of Ghati

remains the same.Thus if moon covers approximately one nakshathra/day.The speed

of moon is 13.2 degrees/24 hours which gives 0.55 degrees or 33 minutes(.55*60)

of arc per hour.Thus as per your defintion if we have to consider 2 ghatis(48

minutes) on both sides for nakshathra gandantha it should be within (48/60 *

33)minutes of arc ie 26.4 minutes which is less than half a degree of

longitude.Which is a very small portion of a pada.So kindly confirm on this.My

Ramadas has accurately quoted Parasara regarding the Ghati’s to be used, whilst

my source is from other Rishi’s, whom my Guru has gathered information from. For

sake of following Parasara, please use the Timespans given by Ramadas, as they

are derived from Parasara’s Hora Shastra – Gandantajaatashantyadhyaaya.

Either way, its clear that the span of 1 pada, certainly does not add up with the timespan given.

Dear Ramdas JiThanks regarding this informative mail regarding

Gandantha.Definition ,remedies and exceptions were very detail in nature and

new info.But regarding the degrees i am now very confused with different

opinions.I will put down my understanding as follows.Ghatis is a measure of

time and hence should be constant.It is with respect to the movement of the

Earth.Earth Takes 24 siderial hours

or 60 ghatis to make 360 degrees or one full zodiac.Thus 360 degrees = 24 hrs;

also 24 hours = 60 ghatisThus equating, 360 degrees = 60 ghatis and hence 1

ghati = 6 degrees.also as 360 degrees = 24 hrs , 1 degree = 4 minutes of

timeThus considering all these 1 ghati = 6*4 = 24 minutes of time. LAGNA

Gandantha---------------Now for lagna Gandantha as per your defintion half

ghatis has to be considered on either side of Jala and Agni Tatwa Rashis.Then

it is 3 degrees of arc on

both sides.This is reasonable as it is almost one pada.As per my calculation

done on 30 minutes of time mentioned by Visti Ji it goes to 7.5 degrees on both

sides.Here the speed of zodiac i believe is the speed of Earth(Because change of

ascendant happens in a period of 2 hours.)In this case i believe 7.5 degrees is

very high as it spans across 2 padas.Thus Visti Ji could kindly correct me if i

am wrong.Nakshathra Gandantha--------------------Here again definiton of Ghati

remains the same.Thus if moon covers approximately one nakshathra/day.The speed

of moon is 13.2 degrees/24 hours which gives 0.55 degrees or 33 minutes(.55*60)

of arc per hour.Thus as per your defintion if we have to consider 2 ghatis(48

minutes) on both sides for nakshathra gandantha it should be within (48/60 *

33)minutes of arc ie 26.4 minutes which is less than half a degree of

longitude.Which is a very small portion of a pada.So kindly confirm on this.My
