There are different methods of offering prayers:

1. some people sit, meditate and recite the Mantras/deity's name.

2. Some Orally recite the mantras or sing bhajans

3. some Visit temples & or Such places where they can offer prayers.

4. Some take some kind of Vrathas and do offerings

5. As you have said some Take pleasure in writing the Lord's name.

 

However if there is a particular mantra prescribed for a particular remedy,

then it has to be practiced as adviced by the Guru. The mantras do work if

pronounced with proper intonations/Pronounciations.

 

This is different from a daily prayer. If your question is regarding Prayer

then you can decide what ever method suits you the best. It has to be

sincere and not just for the sake of writing names 108 times like an

imposition given to an erring student. do what ever means to communicate

with the lord in which you are comfirtable.
