Is the English language a problem ? --> for Sridhar

Dear Jay,

 

Now that the topic seems to be veering towards language

interpretation with a hint of Sanskrit thrown in somewhere, I will

take this opportunity to ask a question that has been bugging me for

sometime.

 

If you followed the debate between Amol Mandar and Rajeev, the

former produced a shloka in Sanskrit and translated it into English

whereupon the latter interpreted the translation IN the context of

the English language. Is this correct? Should not the context used

in Sanskrit be considered for interpretation instead? It is my

opinion that there are too many equivalent words in English whereas

in Sanskrit, it is possible that there may be very few equivalent

words thus leading to a more precise and tighter control of the

exact meaning that the shloka seeks to convey.

 

Valid Q or foolish rambling? dont know and gotta go back to work...

Dear Hari,

 

Nothing is 'foolish'.

What I sent is a result of a research in the US and concerns the pure and

regular ENGLISH language for people who have it as their mother tongue.

My basic motive for doing so was to encourage all "none English language

born" members to see that eventhough they may make spelling mistakes, one

can still read it laud and clear as long as the first and last letters are

intact.

As my knowledge in Sanskrit is nil I can not comment on it nor in regard to

any translations.
