Dear Sharada,

The way to measure was to keep a utensil, of specific size, known as

Ghatika Patra with a hole at the bottom on water filled receptacle. This

is why the time division is known as Ghati or Ghatika. The time taken

for the Ghatika Patra to get submerged in water was equivalent to one

Ghati.

Chandrashekhar.
