Honestly even I don't know too many things regds the history and

reason for celebrating Ratha Sapthami. Some say it is birthday of

Sun or the day he ascended the Sapthasva. It is an auspicious day

for spiritual sadhana, especially those associated with the

Jnana/Yoga paths. Sun is described as Saptasva Maharudha - One who

ascends/rides a celestial Chariot drawn by Seven Horses('asva' here

can be 'horse' symbolically or 'asva' can also mean 'rays' implying

7 frequencies of visible rays out of the Sunlight). In Andhra we do

have a ritual bath with the lead 'jillEdu' ('arka' in sanskrit -

related to Sun) and fruit, akshata rice placed on our heads on this

morning. Sun God is worshipped and rice payasam/pudding cooked

outside in sunlight that is offered to the God and taken as

prasadam. This prasadam is served and taken in 'chikkudu' (cluster

bean) leaf. Cooking atleast one dish of cluster beans is also the

norm. Why cluster-bean? I have no clue

Also, a quick google brought up this interesting link regds Ratha

Sapthami, as followed by Agasthya's tradition (mostly Tamil people).

I am kind of wondering if Lord Sun likes Red clored items. Is there any

significance. It remembers me that few months ago, an astrologer advised me to

offer 'Kukuma' every morning to Lord Sun during Surya Namaskar as Sun is my

Ishta Devatha.

Any thoughts???
