Should I use the Savana (360 day year) when for calculations of the

Vimsottari dasha? Everything seems to fit in better when I use the

savana year but I'm not sure if I should or not.

Hello

Long back, I tried with savana year (logical as entire dasa system

is based upon moon's poistion) but with lahiri corrected with 52+

minutes. The results were quite satisfying. List members may share

their experience.

Namaste,

I use it and it has worked for me. Instead of getting into

technicalities or opinions, I suggest if everything seems to fit with

the savana year, use it.

Namaste,

One more thing I would like to add is as most software use geocentric(

from the center of the earth) calculations and not topocentric

calculations, one may have to use parallax moon . SO I feel 360 day

works better. It has for me anyway

Dear Prafulla,

I use 360 days Savana regularly. I have given the source of this use on

the list many times so shall not repeat.

What about the other dashas (Narayana, Shoola, Kaal) is there anytime

when I shouldn't use the Savana year for the dasha calculations?

Hello Prafulla and Chandrashekhar,

I also have found (initially to my surprise) that the savana year

gives better results. I would like to know if Prafulla in fact means

Lahiri -52'(minus 52') (ie. grahas 52' more advanced in zodiac than

with Lahiri). If so, I was using an ayanamsha very close to this for

a time: Lahiri minus 52'22" (rounded to 52'30"). I have now found

that Lahiri minus 30'16" with a savana year seems generally to work

better. There are also symbolic and astronomical reasons for both of

these options, connected with the intersection of the the galactic

plane and the ecliptic (ie. the galactic nodes, in early Sagittarius

and early Gemini) which I won't go into, as I don't think they would

interest everyone. In any case, the proof of the pudding is in the

eating! I know that the Phaladipika (Adhyaya 19, sloka 4) is quite

unambiguous that the year for nakshatra dasas should be a sidereal

solar year, but a 360 day year was apparently used for some

ceremonial purposes in Vedic times, and many ancient civilisations

also seem to have had a 360 day year for prophetic and often

astrological purposes (Egyptian, Ancient Greek, Pre-Columbian Meso-

America, Old Testament prophets). The dasa system seems to be a very

ancient system of "directions", so perhaps it's worth keeping an

open mind. Some say that the 360 day year is not just an "ideal"

year, but may actually have been the true year in very ancient

times, before things were "churned" and went "out of joint" (cf. the

fascinating and thoroughly-researched book "Hamlet's Mill" by

Giorgio de Santillana, and other studies which can be tracked down

on the web).

Best wishes

Dear Chandrashekhar ji

Do you use with Lahiri Ayanamsa. Somehow, fagan ayanamsa(+53'to

lahiri)with savana year, brings closes to events in my readings. +52

minutes correction to lahiri was even finer.

Dear Prafulla,

I use Lahiri Ayanamsha. I also look at transit Sun and Moon's placement

and get fairly good results. Recording of birth time is by itself is

something about which astrologers have different opinion. I have always

held that it is the time of baby's first cry as it generally coincides

with draw of first breath. But there are different opinions. I also

believe the sages developed the system with latitude for a few minutes

difference, which is likely to occur, in recording of birth time. So I

think, more than accuracy to the second, it is the right application of

principles that leads one to near correct predictions. However these

are my personal opinions and those more learned than me might have a

different view on the subject.

By the way I have posted the shlokas in support of Savana year use on

the list as requested by Graham.

Dear Graham,

I have posted the shlokas you wanted. About use of different Ayanamsha,

I have always held that the Sages have a certain latitude built in to

the system for minor variation in recording time of birth. So if

transits are applied logically with Dashas, even without change of

Ayanamsha, one should be able to come near an accurate prediction.

Chandrashekhar.

Best wishes
