My Sanskrit is VERY limited, so I can't match up many of the words in what I suppose is the translation at the end with those in the slokas (I do have devanagari font but can't read it, I have to rely on the transcriptions). You don't say where these slokas are taken from. And are we to suppose that the Savana year is only to be used for judging family affairs like wife, progeny? The shlokas are from "Daivagya Vilas", and what the shloka mentions is also very clear. Similar shloka is also there in Narada Samhita. Whether we follow it or not is our own decision. But then if we think about it, where is the shloka that 365 and odd day year should be used for predictions? Think about this. Chandrashekhar. I quite agree that that the savana year seems to work better, and so I am currently using it, and no ancient sloka anywhere specifically says to use "365.24-and-a-bit" days. The supporters of that year often quote the Phaladipika, which says that the year in ududasa should be calculated from the sidereal return of the Sun, and the days calculated therefrom (Phaladipika, 19.4). There is no confusion about what is to be treated as a day, so far as I know. The traditional time measurement of birth is on the basis of Ghatis past Sunrise. Then it is said: "A year has 360 days, a year has 720 days and nights together." Aitareya Brahmana 7.17 (BJS vol. 1, p. 20.) Talking of Vedic Jyotish, I think, Aitareya Brahmana and Narada Samhita have to be respected more.But one is free to have his own interpretation of what should constitute a day. Chandrashekhar. Of course I agree that a day is from sunrise to sunrise, and I also agree with your use of the savana year. I was simply pointing out that the 365.25 day year is often justified by its supporters with reference to Mantreswara. I am not in a position to say if for astrology Aitareya Brahmana and Narada Samhita have to be respected more than the Phaladipika, but it's reassuring to have their support! Guest guest Posted March 12, 2005 Report Share Posted March 12, 2005 Dear Chandrashekhar, If I understand you correctly, a savana year is made up of 360 sunrise-to-sunset (savana) days, and should, in your opinion, be used for calculating dasas (I agree). You distinguish this "savana day" from a "solar day" -- would that be the sidereal day, ie. the time it takes the earth to rotate, which is 23h56m4s? In astronomy, there are three options: either this sidereal day, or what is usually called the "true solar day"(the time between two passages of the sun over the MC, which averages out at the same as the sunrise- to-sunset day, but has the added advantage of being calculable for places in the arctic circle, where the sun never rises in winter, but does pass over the meridian line each "day"), and the modern civil "mean" day of 24 hours, adopted simply for convenience. I've thus just realised that when I select a 360 day option in a sidereal computer program, I don't actually know whether it is calculating the sidereal days or variable "true solar days" (which as I say, I think are in essence the same thing as the savana day). But even if there are slightly different days in use, I still think that the main disagreement amongst astrologers (not just Indian, also those in the West sudying ancient Greek astrology, etc) is about the length of the year (ie. how many days in a year?). Indeed, xcept for "centre of sun/edge of sun" options, I've never seen a computer program (eg. JH) offering me a choice of what day to use. If this exchange is getting boring for you, just let me know: for the time being, I'm very happy with the results I'm getting using the 360 "day" option in Jagannatha Hora or in Parashara's Light! I am also, personally, quite happy to accept the authority of Aitareya Brahmana over that of Phaladipika. I don't know if everyone would agree, however, as a lot of techniques currently in use in Indian astrology are thought by many to be post-Vedic. You will get options to use like 365 days Longitude based days etc. under definitions to use for Dashas, use 360 Savana days option, in J Hora software. Chandrashekhar. But even if there are slightly different days in use, I still think that the main disagreement amongst astrologers (not just Indian, also those in the West sudying ancient Greek astrology, etc) is about the length of the year (ie. how many days in a year?). Indeed, xcept for "centre of sun/edge of sun" options, I've never seen a computer program (eg. JH) offering me a choice of what day to use. If this exchange is getting boring for you, just let me know: for the time being, I'm very happy with the results I'm getting using the 360 "day" option in Jagannatha Hora or in Parashara's Light! I am also, personally, quite happy to accept the authority of Aitareya Brahmana over that of Phaladipika. I don't know if everyone would agree, however, as a lot of techniques currently in use in Indian astrology are thought by many to be post-Vedic.
