Dear Sh. Sanjay Rath,

Some discussion keep going on the list regarding fasting on the day lorded by

Upapada which has your approval as well as a remedial measure to save the

marital tensions etc.

I have some clarification on this issue as follows.

Upapada is the pada of 12H. It can be viewed in 2 ways.

12H falls as the 6H from 7H, as such it indicates the sufferings of the

spouse. The pada of 12H finds expression of the sufferings of the spouse.

This is perhaps the reason that the disease profile of spouse is studied by

Upapada, which seems logical.

If that is so, how the fasting by the native helps ? Infact, the spouse

should fast on this day to discharge the debts of karmas and not the native.

In the second perspective, 12H indicates the non-physical being of the native

which may be said as the sub-concious state. This house makes the native away

from his material self, and to a good extent, the 12H gets involved for

Vairagya yogas etc. Here, again, the pada of 12H would find expression of the

sub-normal of the native.

If that is so, the fasting on the Upapada day should help the native to meet

the needs of material detatchment. I do not apprehend how would it help the

native to save tensions in maritl life, leaving one possibility that it may

strengthen the morale of ignoring sufferings.

I need a crystal clarity on this fasting issue. Please feel free to correct

me for any error in my understanding.

Other scholars like Mr. Narsimha, Vishti, Ms. Kanupriys etc may also offer

their valuable interpretations on this issue.

Thanks and Regards,

Vijay Kumar
