Guest guest
Viya, Peepal tree has been believed sacred and a sign of peace and prosperity, specially in Indian sub continent from time immemorial. In the Bhagavad Gita, Lord Krishna tells to Arjuna, "Amongst trees I am the Ashwatha (Peepal tree)". According to Edwin Arnold, as a symbol of the highest and most archetypal order, it is a tree which does not grow in this world but has roots which are generated in the highest heaven out of the Rootless Root of All-Being. It is also known as the Bodhi tree. Gautam Buddha attained 'enlightenment' under the Bodhi (peepal) tree. There are significant numbers of sayings in the praise of Bodhi in Buddhist sacred text. "Here at the Bodhi tree I have won ... the very essence of being. Here at the Bodhi tree I won preeminence after seven days, woke up to enlightenment, and reached the end of the jungle and wilderness of birth, old-age and death." (Mahavastu, Volume III) Later during Mourya reign, many saplings of the Bodhi tree have been planted in through out India by daughter of Emperor Ashoka - Sanghamitra. Regards, M.
