Guest guest
Dear Renuji: Peetathipathis means "Heads of the religious institution" in this case. The shankaracharyas are the Religious Heads of Advaita (it is a branch of Indian philosophy and theology that believes in monism and non-duality) tradition. Peetam literally means a pedastal. So your assumption that they are "Gurus" is correct with the added qualifier that they are deemed to be "Jagatgurus" - "Gurus for everyone in the Universe and have responsibility of guiding anyone and everyone who seek their guidance". Blessed be.
