Dear Richard,

Namaste

The passages leading up to the quoted lines do NOT only relate to Venus and

Jupiter, but all the planets in gocara except for Rahu (and Ketu). But later in

the slokas, the gist of it.

In jyotish, malefics/evil planets described here are to be taken as Mars,

Saturn, Rahu etc.

I will accept in the case of vivaha prsna, the concentration is on Venus and

Jupiter (from slokas 394.5 onwards), but NOT in the case of gorcara as we all

well know that there are 9 (go) cara (movements). The discussions given here are

based on the vedha caused, whether good or bad.

You can see from sloka 271, it began with gocara of Sun, then Moon, Mars ( have

skipped the rest). The passages are provided below for your perusal should

suffice.

FW: Translation of the passage from Naradiya Puranam on Gems

Dear Swee,

Namaste.

Prof Dr. Satya Vrat Shastri, Padma Shri, a Sanskrit legend living in

Delhi, is the most highly decorated Sanskrit scholar now alive on

Mother Earth. I’m sure Pt. Sanjay must know his fame. Sanskrit doesn't

get higher or more renowned than Prof. Satya Vrat Shastri (presently

Honorary Professor, Special Centre for Sanskrit Studies, Jawaharlal

Nehru University, New Delhi).

He has translated the verse. It reads quite differently from your

translation (below).

What do you think? How to settle the disparity in translations? Surely

you don’t expect to match wits with India's Prof. Dr. Satya Vrat

Shastri? http://www.satyavrat-shastri.net <---REF.

Hope this meets you in good spirits!!!

Best regards,

Richard

Translation of the passage

Dear Sri Hrisikesananda das Ji,

Many thanks for your kind e-mail. I have checked the verses from the

Naradiya Mahapurana which I have.

The verses occur there in the context of the planets Guru and Shukra.

The translation :

The planet will not yield any kind of fruit, good or bad when it is

eclipsed.

The loss and gain depends upon the planets. Hence one should placate

them with effort when they (start) giving untoward fruit

(viparita-phala).

For placating the sun and others one should wear in the order of ruby

for Sun, pearl for Moon, Coral for Mars, Emerald for Mercury, Yellow

Sapphire for Jupiter, Diamond for Venus, Blue Sapphire for Saturn,

Gomeda for Rahu and Cat's Eye Gem for Ketu.

I am afraid, the text as it is, does not support our theory of

strengthening the Anukula Grahas to ward off or mitigate evil. The line

'santim kuryat prayatnatah' is crucial here. This is immediately

followed by the indication of the stones for particular Grahas. This is

what is the 'santi' meant here.

With love to Jiva, Champakalata and your noble self,

I remain,

Affectionately Yours,

Satya Vrat Shastri

Dear Swee,

Namaste!!!

Very interesting!!! I'm glad you sent the reply below, specially to

Prof Shastriji. I look forward to his reply. I'll ask him to please

reply to all the recepients as well. I sincerely hope we can establish

"anukula-vad" with this verse. That would be great!!!

Best rgds,

Richard
