Dear Student Souvik:

Definitely....hearing an audio CD of the recital is also auspicious!

This falls under the spiritual practice of "Sravanam" (listening to

recital of classics). "Sravanam" is as effective as "patanam" (actual

recital). But then, it should not be a mere casual listening. The

listening should be done in a meditative attitude and after performing

the poojas if one is doing this procedure for materialistic ends.

Some one else had asked if only Pandits should recite it......Not

necessarily if you are sure that you can chant the original without

errors though getting the chant done by learned Pandits and listening

to that recital has been the recommended procedure in the Vaalmiiki

Raamayanaa itself ( ofcourse, there are some who feel these parts are

interpolations by later day Brahmins who wanted to eke a livelihood

for their community!)

Of course, if a person is performing this for purely spiritual

purposes, no taboos apply at all! You can even listen to the recital

as you are driving your way to office. Your subconscious will make

contact with the Divine Symphony of the classical recital and still

bring some subtle benefits in your life. If it is for task

fulfillment, proper procedural dogmas should be preferrably followed.

Blessed be.

Pandit. R.DAKSHINAMOORTHI.
