Guest guest
Hi I am a "aging" american who has come late in life to the worship of the divine mother and the rich tradition that this group provides so much information about and insight into. I have been meditating and studying sanskrit for about two years, so i try to read the sanskrit texts, but i always must have the crutch of the english translation. I have a copy of the "sri lalita sahasranama" published by sri ramakrishna math. I have noticed the translation of some verses go well beyond the literal, but in trying to understand, I have looked at some transliterations on the web, and found that there are variations in the sanskrit. My long winded introduction leads to a simple question for this group where I hope to find the expertise.. Are there slight differences in the versions of this lovely text, and if there are, are some more authentic than others thank you for this group, and the insight into devi bhakti that it has give me. bill. Guest guest
Dear akazambara, *Aadi Shankara's Authuntic text has been mutilated (perhaps un intentionally) by * *various people who wanted to "pass it down"* to their deciples/successors etc., Again there are various scholors whose pronounciation of Sanskrit is influenced by their mother tounge. India has many languages. Most of them are not phonetically transcribable. Very few languages like TELUGU, Malayalam etc are very close to sanscrit and are capable of getting transliteration of any language in the world. It is scolers whose mother toungue has rigid and limited alphabets often use multiple pronounciation with the same set of alphabets. These are the people who have caused the distortion. Some distortions in pronounciation by Tamiliyans and by Bengalis and many nrthern Indians has lead to distortion that is Sanskrit to their mother toungue to sanskrit. If you are interested please try to get Sanscrit text by a scholor from Telugu land in India or from Nambudri in kerala. I don't know which is your mother toungue. > > Hi > > I am a "aging" american who has come late in life to the worship of > the divine mother and the rich tradition that this group provides so > much information about and insight into. Guest guest
I am just guessing that Sri Shankara wrote it, and there is one version with slight differences in order of words and some mistakes which came from hand copying the original and its diaspora. - akazambara Tuesday, May 16, 2006 11:05 PM different versions of sri lalita sahasranama? Guest guest
LS has been transmitted as part of the Brahmanda Purana and has no human author, it is uttered by the 4 Vagdevatas to praise Lalita. Advaita as formulated by A.S. is an important part of Indian Philosophy. A.S. supposedly authored the Saundaryalahari and Anandalahari, these works are also concernend with srividya but are less universal in their approach, since they are inspired by the unique approach of the smarta sampradaya which is not the only, and not even the main philosophical approach within the Sri Vidya Traditions.
