Earthquakes and all forms of catastrophe are the result of

too many accumulated sinful reactions. Thus material nature

punishes humanity with all sorts of calamities, of which

earthquakes are one.

We have only one subtle body, called the linga-sarira, made

up of mind, intelligence and false ego. But within that one

subtle body are kosas (sheaths) of conditioned consciousness,

numbered as 5: annamaya, pranamaya, manomaya, vijnanamaya and

anandamaya. When the mind is oriented towards eating, it is

in the annamaya phase. When it is oriented towards physical

endeavors, it is in the pranamaya phase. When it is oriented

towards mental activity, it is in its manomaya phase. When

it is oriented towards intellectual discrimination, it is in

its vijanamaya phase. When it is oriented to spiritual

happiness, it is in its anandamaya phase. The impersonal

conception of spiritual happiness is not free of mental

conditioning; therefore it is called vimukta-manina (the

mental idea of liberation). That anandamaya is therefore

still a feature of the subtle body, "the last snare of maya",

as Srila Prabhupada said about merging into the Brahman

effulgence. Real anandamaya, which is beyond the subtle

body and beyond impersonalism, is attainable only in the

spiritual body, the svarupa of the soul. The causal body

(karana-deha) is the linga-sarira that has been purified by

mystic yoga. It is called karana-deha because in this subtle

body endowed with mystic power one can reach the edge of the

spiritual world, the causal ocean (karana-jal). But one can

enter into Vaikuntha only with the siddha-deha (spiritual

body). The 4 Kumaras reached the gate of Vaikuntha in their

karana-deha forms. But they could not enter.

More on the subtle body

---------------------------

Here are some further details about the subtle body (in reference

to the question of Bh. Markus).

The gross physical body is called the sthula-sarira. It is nourished

by consciousness in the annamaya-kosa. Anna means "grains"; when Lord

Krsna states in Bhagavad-gita that all living beings lives by grains,

he is speaking of living beings in the annamaya conception who nourish

their gross bodies by eating. The annamaya conception is predominant

in Bhur-loka (the earthly region of the universe). In other words,

those in the annamaya conception cannot be promoted beyond the earth.

The linga-sarira (consisting of mind, intelligence, and false ego which

together form the cetana or conditioned consciousness, which is

loosely called "the mind") also includes the subtle karmendriyas (5

working senses), the subtle jnanendriyas (5 knowledge-acquiring

senses), and the 5 pranas. Living beings who are not so much concerned

with the nourishing of the gross body, who are in the conceptions of

pranamaya, manomaya and vijnanamaya, identify with the linga-sarira.

Such beings include the civilized humans who live on the earthly

Bhur-loka,

the denizens of the Bhuva-loka (where water or liquidity predominates--

the example is the moon, which is cooling and nectar-producing because

of the predominance of the watery element), and the denizens of the

Svarga and Maharlokas, where fire predominates.

The planet of Brahma is the goal of those in the anandamaya conception

(the conception spiritual bliss through becoming one with Brahman).

They aspire to merge into the existence of Brahma and go with him

to the region of Mahavisnu (the karana-jal) when the universe is

destroyed. Those who are less advanced dwell in the Jana and Tapa

lokas, where the airy element predominates. Those who are more

advanced reside in Satya- or Brahmaloka itself, where ether is the

predominant element. The residents of Jana, Tapa and Satya lokas

are advanced in the eight yogic perfections. They have transcended

even the linga-sarira. Their forms are called karana-deha (causal

bodies). The causal body is fully endowed with mystic powers. It

is not engaged either in subtle or gross sense gratification, like the

linga-sarira and sthula-sarira.

But the karana-deha is not free of the false ego. Therefore these

mystics are generally attached to their powerful positions within

the universe, and when Lord Maha-Visnu breathes the universes out

again, they return to their former posts in the Satya, Tapa and

Janalokas.

Answers to Rajavidya Prabhu's questions

---------------------------

My main source for the intricate details is the Govinda-bhasya Vedanta-

sutra commentary of Srila Baladeva Vidyavhusana, and my secondary

sources are the books of BNK Sharma, a Vaisnava scholar of the Madhva

Dvaita-Vedanta line, whom I, Krsnaksetra Prabhu and Bhaktivaibhava

Swami met in Udipi a few years ago. Srila Prabhupada gives a basic

explanation of annamaya, pranamaya, etc. in the Krsna Book chapter

entitled Prayers by the Personified Vedas. He gives a briefer summary

of these in his purport to SB 6.15.12-15.

subtle coverings

---------------------------

Dear Gosvami Maharaja,

Please accept my humble obeisances.

All Glories to Srila Prabhupada!

All glories to you!

In SB 6.15.15 p. it is said, "One who is liberated from the CONCEPTIONS

of annamaya, pranamaya, manomaya, vijnanamaya and anandamaya and who is

perfectly aware of the subtle coverings of the soul is called

pancasikha.", and in KB "Prayers by the personified Vedas" SP refers to

annamaya, prannamaya etc. as "five departments of existence" or "stages

of consciousness". So my question is, does SP speek about two different

things(subtle coverings and stages of consciousness), and if yes then,

are these two explainations connected and how.

Please excuse me for my poor ability to formulate questions.

Re: subtle coverings

---------------------------

According to Madhvacarya's ontology, the sthula-sarira (gross body)

corresponds to the annamaya-kosha (the sheath formed from anna, or food).

The suksma-sarira or linga-sarira (suble body) encompasses the koshas

(sheaths) of pranamaya (vital air), manomaya (mind) and vijnanamaya

(intellect).

The karana-deha (creative body), which is enjoyed by the residents of

Janaloka, Tapaloka and Satyaloka, corresponds to the anandamaya-kosha,

the bliss-sheath next to the jiva itself. This anandamaya-kosha is

used as a body by yogis in mystic trance.

As Srila Prabhupada writes, the yogis who reach Janaloka, Tapaloka and

Satyaloka are devotees of Brahma. Indeed, at the time of the

mahapralayana they merge into his karana-deha and are taken by him to

have darshan of Maha-Vishnu.

The ananda of the siddha-deha (the form of the soul liberated in the

spiritual world) is not external to the soul. It is the intrinsic

quality of the soul in pure Krsna consciousness: sat-cid-ananda vigraha.
