It lies 5 miles east of Kumbakonam in Thanjavur District, and it can be reached by bus or train. PURANA: According to be the Brahmanda Purana, Sage Markandeya was performing Penance in the Tulasivana (the site of the present temple). One day, he discovered a female child on the ground beside a Tulasi Plant. She was christened Bhoomi Devi. When she came of age, an old man bent by age and walking with the aid of a stick, came to the sage and sought the hand of his daughter. The sage, shocked and obviously reluctant, mentioned - perhaps as an excuse that the girl did not even know the simple things of the household, might forget even to add salt in the food prepared and thereby incur the easy wrath of the old man. When he found the sage unyielding, the old man revealed his identity by taking the true form (of Lord Narayana), with the usual conch wheel, and other jewels, and the sage now felt happy at his lot. The Lord then and there told the sage that He was never more to take salt as far as this place of worship concerned. The Lord and Bhoomi Devi were married and they took Their permanent Abode at the same place. Talk to your friends online with Messenger. http://im.
