Ultimately, he got liberation (sarupya). Can his > bhakti be categorized under the "pure bhakti" as defined by Srila Rupa > Goswami ? He falls in the category of the distressed people who approach the Lord as per BG 7.16: O best among the Bharatas, four kinds of pious men begin to render devotional service unto Me-the distressed, the desirer of wealth, the inquisitive, and he who is searching for knowledge of the Absolute. Though he prayed to the Supreme Lord to save him, he was not exactly aware about who was the Supreme Lord. >From SB 8.3.30 purp: From the description of Gajendra, he apparently was aiming at the supreme authority although he did not know who the supreme authority is. He conjectured, "There is a supreme authority who is above everything." So his prayers were not quite on the level of pure bhakti, but the prayers were so intense & sincere, that the Lord descended to protect him and made him His associate in Vaikuntha by granting him sarupya mukti.
