would someone more learned care to improve on this attempted word-for-word

synonyms, please?

ugraM - ferocious / terrible

 

vIram - heroic

 

mahA-viSNuM - the Supreme Lord Maha Vishnu

 

jvalantaM - (guessing from the translation below) fiery?

 

sarvato mukham - whose face is everywhere / who faces all directions (?)

 

nRsiMhaM - Lord Nrsimha

 

bhISaNaM bhadraM - turns poison into auspicious substance

 

mRtyur mRtyuM - is the original mantra not 'mRtyumRtyum' ? - He is death to

death itself

 

namAmy ahaM - I offer my respectful obeisances unto Him

nRsiMhaM bhISaNaM bhadraM

I bow down to Lord NRsiMhadeva who is ferocious and heroic like Lord

ViSNu. He is burning from every side. He is terrific, auspicious and

the death of death personified.

 

 

"This mantra is quoted or at least referred to in many scriptures. The

NRsiMha TapAni UpaniSad also give the history of this mantra. In the

last creation the presiding deity was Lord NRsiMhadeva and this was

the mantra inspiring the entire creation into which Lord BrahmA was

initiated, as in the present creation the presiding deity is zrI KRSNa

and He initiated BrahmA into the KAma-GAyatri. (...)"
