Why was Yudhisthira taken to hell?

Please read carefully, according to the Mahabharata only Yudhisthira went to

hell for a few moments. I have heard (no exact reference available) that the

acaryas explain that there is an higher purpose behind Yudhisthira being taken

to hell. Indra wanted to deliver all the residents of hell by giving them the

association of a pure devotee like King Yudhisthira.

 

bhavad-vidha bhagavatas

tirtha-bhutah svayam vibho

tirthi-kurvanti tirthani

svantah-sthena gadabhrta

 

TRANSLATION

 

My Lord, devotees like your good self are verily holy places personified.

Because you carry the Personality of Godhead within your heart, you turn all

places into places of pilgrimage. (SB 1.13.10)

 

Even a moment's association with a pure devotee has ultimate results like the

scriptures repeatedly point out.
