(From Paramatma Sandarbha- Sri Jiva Goswamipada):

Padma Pur€Ša (Uttara-khaŠa 42.105-106) and the ®iva Pur€Ša, Lord ®iva

repeats to P€rvat… the following words originally spoken by Lord ViŠu:

tv€m €r€dhya tath€ ambho

grahiy€mi varaˆ sad€

dv€par€dau yuge bh™tv€

kalay€ m€nu€diu

"O ®iva, I will accept this service from you: When the Dv€para-yuga has

ended and the Kali-yuga has begun, I want you to incarnate among the human

beings.

sva-own; €gamaiƒ-with scriptures; kalpitaiƒ-imagined; tvam-you;

ca-also; gopaya-conceal; yena-by which; sy€t-may be; s˜iƒ-creation;

e€-this; uttarottar€-more and more; iti-thus.

"In Kali-yuga, mislead the people in general by propounding imaginary

meanings for the Vedas to bewilder them.* In this way turn the people away

from Me. Make them averse to Me. Hide Me from them."

v€r€he ca

sj€mi-create; €u-quickly; yaƒ-who; jan€n-the people; mohayiyati-will be

bewildered; tvam-you; ca-and; rudra-®iva; mah€-b€haƒ-O mighty armed one;

moha-€str€Ši-bewildering scriptures; k€raya-please do.

In the Var€ha Pur€Ša Lord ViŠu says:

"I will create a situation where the people will be bewildered. O

mighty-armed ®iva, please write books that will bewilder the people.

atathy€ni vitathy€ni

ca-and; €tm€nam-yourself; aprak€am-unmanifested; ca-also; m€m-Me;

kuru-please do.

"O mighty-armed ®iva, please write books that preach many lies and

conceal the real truth. Make yourself prominent, and conceal Me."

pur€Š€n€ˆ ca madhye yad yat sattvika-kalpa-kath€mayaˆ tat tat

r…-viŠu-mahima-param. yad yat t€masa-kalpa-kath€mayaˆ tat tac

chiv€di-mahima-param iti r…-viŠu-pratip€daka-pur€Šasyaiva

samyag-jñ€na-pradatvaˆ sattv€t sañj€yate jñ€nam iti daran€t.

pur€Š€n€m-of the Puranas; ca-and; madhye-in the midst; yad

yat-whatever; sattvika-kalpa-kath€mayam-descriptions that are true and good;

tat tat-they; r…-viŠu-mahima-param-devoted to the glories of Lord ViŠu;

yad yat-whaetver; t€masa-kalpa-kath€mayam-descriptions manifested from the

mode of ignroance; tat tat-that; iv€di-mahima-param-the glories of Siva and

others; iti-thus; r…-viŠu-pratip€daka-pur€Šasya-of a Purana that describes

the glories of Lord ViŠu; eva-indeed; samyag-jñ€na-pradatvam-giving true

knowledge; sattv€t sañj€yate jñ€nam iti daran€t-from the description in

Bhagavad-g…t€ 14.17.

The Pur€Šas in the mode of goodness glorify Lord ViŠu, whereas the

Pur€Šas in the mode of ignorance glorify Lord ®iva and others. Therefore the

Pur€Šas that glorify Lord ViŠu present the actual truth. This is also

confirmed by the following words of Bhagavad-g…t€ (14.17):

"From the mode of goodness real knowledge develops."*

tath€ ca m€tsye

s€ttvikeu ca kalpeu

m€h€tmyam adhikaˆ hareƒ

r€jaseu ca m€h€tmyaˆ

tath€-so; ca-and; m€tsye-in the Matsya Purana; s€ttvikeu-in goodness;

ca-also; kalpeu-in determination; m€h€tmyam-glory; adhikam-better; hareƒ-of

Lord Hari; r€jaseu-in passionm; ca-and; m€h€tmyam-glorification;

adhikam-better; brahmaŠaƒ-of Brahma; viduƒ-they know.

In the Matsya Pur€Ša (53.67-68) it is also said:

"The sages know that the glorification of Lord Hari, which is contained

in the goodness Pur€Šas is better than the glorification of Brahm€, which is

contained in the passion Pur€Šas.

tadvad agne ca m€h€tmyaˆ

t€maseu ivasya ca

sa‰k…rŠeu sarasvaty€ƒ

pitŠ€ˆ ca nigadyate. iti.

tadvat-in the same way; agneƒ-of Agni; ca-and; m€h€tmyam-the

glorification; t€maseu-in ignorance; ivasya-of ®iva; ca-also;

sa‰k…rŠeu-expanded; sarasvaty€ƒ-of Sarasvati; pitŠ€m-of the Pitas;

ca-also; nigadyate-said; iti-thus.

"The sages also say that the glorification of Lord Hari is better than

the glorification of ®iva and Agni, which is contained in the ignorance

Pur€Šas, and the glorification of Lord Hari is also better than the

glorification of Sarasvat… and the Pit€s, which is contained in a host of

miscellaneous scriptures.
