I don't know the answer, but the following may be offered as a possible

answer.

 

Traditionally all men, unless they were uncivilized outcaste, had to be

diksitah or initiated in a bonafide sampradaya. Such men would wear tilaka

of their sampradaya. Women wouldn't wear a tilaka because only men would be

initiated. All women had to be married and their husbands were their gurus.

 

Srimati Radharani is of course way beyond these social rules, but 5000 years

ago that was the system.
