Guest guest
> Prabhupada's books are better than His speeches. This is because He > concentrates tremendously and chooses each word when He writes these > books. > This is not my opinion but He Himself has said this to me. > > From a letter from > Tamal Krishna Gosvami > Secretary to Srila Prabhupada > > From the new vedabase >I would hate that this statement now becomes a generality. >Sometimes when I read Srila Prabhupada's books I get more out of it than >from hearing his lectures but at other times I get more out of hearing >his lectures than reading a specific purport. As for his disciples who >had his personal association, even a simple look from him could say more >than a million words in any purport or lecture. >During lectures Srila Prabhupada would also assess his audience and >speak at an appropriate level. Many times Srila Prabhupada would be >asked the same questions but he would answer differently, addressing the >mentality/mood of the person asking the question. >Varsabhanavi-devi dasi In Srila Prabhupada's conversations with me about comparing his book writing (or composing) and his spoken lectures, he stressed the time, care and concentration that was required in the act of writing. Tamal Krishna Goswami has properly pointed out that it was not his own opinion that Srila Prabhupada's books were "better," but it was Srila Prabhupada's. However, I do not think that Srila Prabhupada intended that we should make a value judgment between the two. We cherish Srila Prabhupada's lectures almost as much as his books, because we appreciate how much energy Srila Prabhupada expended on his lectures. To my knowledge Srila Prabhupada lectured (and recorded it) every day everywhere, transcending the impediments of fatigue, ill health, or jet lag. It is painful to hear Srila Prabhupada lecturing despite severely coughing; but nothing could keep Srila Prabhupada from lecturing, (although there was one concern he told us that prevented his writing). In fact, Srila Prabhupada told me that what he spoke in the daily class was based from what he had been writing during the previous night and early morning, that one was a continuation from the other. Therefore, he told me that he especially liked when the verse he lectured on was identical with the one he had just been writing about, which occurred with sections of the Bhagavad Gita and Srimad Bhagavatam. Guest guest
In the single response I have received to my posting (quoted below) about comparing Srila Prabhupada's book writing and his lecturing, Bhakti Vikas Swami has kindly thanked me for contibuting it. In it I had hinted at how there was nothing that could keep Srila Prabhupada from lecturing, but there was one circumstance that prevented him from writing. Since no one has asked me what that circumstance was, I assume that everyone who has read it knows what it was. > In Srila Prabhupada's conversations with me about comparing his book writing (or composing) and his spoken lectures, he stressed the time, care and concentration that was required in the act of writing.
