Here's a new one from my book "The Great Transcendental Adventure" (now on

the new Vedabase):

11 Feb 1973, Melbourne Australia

"Srila Prabhupäda relaxed in his room as the afternoon Sunday feast program

commenced downstairs. A sample plate of the feast had been offered to

Prabhupäda, who tasted morsels of each preparation, talking lightly between

bites.

“The Räma Krishna mission is popular in Bengal because it does not restrict

— ‘Whatever you like, you can eat,’ — but our mission does not say that.

“Formerly, Allen Ginsberg [Prabhupäda pronounced it as “Jinsberg”] was very

frequently coming to me. And, he could understand — intelligent man — that

we are not giving up these four principles. So he does not come any more. He

thinks ‘I cannot give up these, and Swami does not like me.’ Therefore, as

an intelligent man, he does not come any more. I’m thinking ... his

influence with the young men is not so strong any more?”

Madhudvisa: Ginsberg? No. He’s simply a remnant of a past age.

Prabhupäda: Old fossil.

Madhudvisa: Yes!

Prabhupäda: And — Timothy Leary...?

Madhudvisa: Jail!

Prabhupäda: He’s in jail?

Madhudvisa: He’s been arrested in Afghanistan and brought back to America.

Madhudvisa explained that Leary — ex-Harvard psychology instructor and

once-popular advocate of LSD — had been arrested previously and convicted

for drug smuggling, then put into jail for twenty years, but he had escaped

from prison, flown to Algiers, and had been at large for three years. One

month ago, he was again handed over to US officials and was now in jail

again.

Prabhupäda shook his head. “Yes, he has killed your country by introducing

this LSD. This is a great disservice — he and Ginsberg. Not only drugs, but

sex indulgence, homosex also.”
