I think your misunderstanding is based on the fact that you and your boys have counted verses as they are numbered now. It was quite different when other puranas were composed -- in actual fact 'numbering' of the verses is quite a new invention. Puranas dont refer to first verse as SB 1.1.1 :-). When the number of verses was addressed in the previous ages -- it is the meter with which one recites the verses that is concerned. The meter and timing of recitation is quite big for Bhagavatam if compared with other puranas. So for ones estimates of timing for 18000 cycles should be taken for recitation. Numbering of the verses is a much later thing then the number of 18000 given in other vedic sources.
