Mahabharata says that Vedavyas performaed penances and pleased Lord Shiva. Lord Shiva blessed him that he will have a son who will be equal to all five material elements potency. Vedavyas was trying to create the sacrifical fire and Ghrtachi an Apsaras woman came there and Vyasadevs mind was agitated. She left but Vyasdev could not control his mind and his semen fell in to the fire. When the fire was churned for the sacrifice (Arani) a child was born who is Sukadeva Goswami. You can read Mahabharatam Shanti Parvam chapters 323 to 333 2. Skanda Puranam Nagara Khandam chapter 147 says that Vyasadev married Jabalis daughter Pinjala and Suka was born from her. Suka stayed 12 years in the womb and only after Vyasa brought Krsna from Dwaraka who assured Suka that Maya wont touch him that he came out of the womb. Both stories are valid.
