That's interesting. Scholars here (e.g. Elizabeth Puttick who studies women in NRMs) have written that it is a Japanese title for a Zen Buddhist "priest", and that it was a more modest title adopted partly for tactical reasons to distance himself from the scandals (when he was "Bhagavan Rajneesh").
