Guest guest
Hare Krishna. Please accept my humble obeisances. All glories to Srila Prabhupada. The following question was asked by a member of congrgation. I would appreciate if someone can enlighten me on this subject. "In South Indian state of Kerala there is worship of Sri Ayyappan in Sabarai Malai. He is considered Hari-Hara putran. Lot of people observe many auterities to visit Sabari Malai and have darhsan of Sri Ayyappan and the Makara Jyothi. a)Is there any reference about Sri Ayyappan in scriptures like SB or other puranas? b)What is our movement's stand in terms of worshipping Sri Ayyappan." Thanks for your help. Aspiring to be your humble servant Karunanidhi Krishna dasa

According to him SP replied that "if it's in the Puranas, it's true..." The popular story, yes, is that Lord Shiva and Mohini Murti had a connection and that as a result a son was born, who is known by various epitaphs as "Ayyappa Swami", "Harihara Suta" (the son of Vishnu and Shiva), etc. However... I for one cannot profer the story from the Puranas... but then there are literally 100s & 1000s of shlokas in the puranas... If someone would/could research this question, it would be very interesting indeed to know more... Nowadays the temple of Ayyappa Swami at Sabarimala in Kerala has become immensely popular with lakes of pilgrims (most of them from Shudra castes) visiting there at the end of December (the exact occasion and tithi - despite the fact that I read a book on the subject published by Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan on the subject eons ago...) slip my mind at the moment) after performing various austerities for 40 days, such as giving up meat eating, tea drinking, etc., etc., etc., and wearing black clothing and tripundra (3 lined, horizontal "shiva" tilak)... you see them all over the place in South India and even at Bombay...
