According to some devotees, this story of Lord Shiva and Mohini Murti having a connection and thus begetting a son is not found in any authorized scriptures including the Puranas and thus the worship of Ayyappa is simply a concocted form of worship. Neither do I have any reference for this nor I can vouch for it but I have heard this from some devotee sources whom I can't remember now.
