These terms are sometimes used interchangeably although each have specific

specialized meanings. Indeed, each word has several interrelated meanings.

The most common are as follows.

 

Raakshasha -- man-eater; see SB 3.20.21. Also often means the class of

hobgoblins and similar lower spirits.

 

Asura -- "Sura" means demigod, so "asura" means non-demigod, or those who

are the opposite of demigods. Literally, those not allowed to drink sura (a

type of wine drunk by demigods).

 

Daanava -- sons of Danu; a sub-class of asuras.

 

Daitya -- sons of Diti; a sub-class of asuras.
