In comparison to other explanations given on the maha-mantra (see below) Bhaktivinode has given quite a unique explanation in this anagram he has given of the maha-mantra at the end of Hari-nama-cintamani. While other explanations are there which reflect the concepts of different sadhakas, this explanation is the mood in which Srimati Radharani Herself chants. When She is separated from Krishna and is absorbed in the mad delirium known as pralap Radharani chants this mantra and imagines that She is enjoying pastimes with Krishna as Bhaktivinode has described. It is actually a quite confidential and intimate description, which perhaps explains why HH Bhanu Swami and HG Sarvabhavana Prabhu both did not include it in their translations. Only Kusa included a translation of it and he was very careful how he worded it. It is something like reading Gita Govinda. I would not recommend it for the general masses. > I'm asking this because when I chant hare Krsna. I naturally focus on > Krsna's form. There is a nice booklet which has been published by several of the Gaudiya Math's in Bengali which includes different explanations of the maha-mantra by Raghunath Das Goswami, Jiva Goswami, Gopal Guru Goswami and Thakur Bhaktivinode (different than the one at the end of HNC, but not speaking about sakhya rasa). I think translations of most of these have already been posted on this conference. So far as "the *only* understanding of the maha-mantra", of course there are many. As you must be aware Srila Prabhupada in a couple of places has said that one may consider the name "Rama" to indicate Balaram.
