In fact, Srila Prabhupada's instructions on Ekadasi were short and sweet: No grains or beans. Bas. If one desires, of course, additional austerities may be undertaken for one's Ekadasi vrata, and that is a good thing. But those of us who follow the simple standard set forth in the early days of ISKCON are sometimes made to feel as if we are not following correctly by those who desire to perform extra austerities, and that is not good. To further complicate matters, the official ISKCON manual for deity worship now buts forward a standard much like the one Rama Kesava mentions. Even though this book is only intended as a manual for deity worship, I have still seen it presented as the default standard for devotee behavior.
