Similarly, other false devotees think that studying books of the previous €c€ryas is unadvisable, like studying dry empiric philosophies. But ®r…la J…va Gosv€m…, following the previous €c€ryas, has inculcated the conclusions of the scriptures in the six theses called the ±a˜-sandarbhas. False devotees who have very little knowledge of such conclusions fail to achieve pure devotion for want of zeal in accepting the favorable directions for devotional service given by self-realized devotees. Such false devotees are like impersonalists, who also consider devotional service no better than ordinary fruitive actions." morning walk 13.5.75 "Paramahaˆsa: ®r…la Prabhup€da, I remember once I heard a tape where you told us that we should not try to read the books of previous €c€ryas. Prabhup€da: Hmm? Amogha: That we should not try to read Bhaktivinoda’s books or earlier books of other, all €c€ryas. So I was just wondering... Prabhup€da: I never said that. Amogha: You didn’t say that? Oh. Prabhup€da: How is that? Amogha: I thought you said that we should not read the previous €c€ryas’ books. Prabhup€da: No, you should read. Amogha: We should. Prabhup€da: It is misunderstanding." cc Madhya 15.99: Sri Krishna Vijaya by Gunaraja Khan CC- adi-lila 5.203: "Sri Sanatana Gosvami Prabhu, the teacher of the science of devotional service, wrote several books, of which the Brhad-bhagavatamrta is very famous. Anyone who wants to know about the subject matter of devotees, devotional service, and Krsna must read this book. Sanatana Gosvami also wrote a special commentary on the Tenth Canto of Srimad-Bhagavatam known as the Dasama-tippani, which is so excellent that by reading it one can understand very deeply the pastimes of Krsna in his exchanges of loving activities." CC adi 8.31 Actually going to Vnd€vana involves taking shelter of the six Gosv€m…s by reading the Bhakti-ras€mta-sindhu, Vidagdha-m€dhava, Lalita-m€dhava and the other books that they have given. In this way one can understand the transcendental loving affairs between R€dh€ and KŠa. Krishna book ch. 46 This is called l…l€-smaraŠa, and it is the process of association with KŠa most recommended by great devotees; even Lord Caitanya, when He was at Pur…, enjoyed l…l€-smaraŠa association with KŠa. Those in the most exalted position of devotional service and ecstasy can live with KŠa always by remembering His pastimes. ®r…la Vivan€tha Cakravart… µh€kura has given us a transcendental literary work entitled KŠa-bh€van€mta, which is full with KŠa’s pastimes. Exalted devotees can remain absorbed in KŠa-thought by reading such books. Any book of kŠa-l…l€, even this book, KŠa, or our Teachings of Lord Caitanya, is actually solace for devotees feeling separation from KŠa. SB 1.1.1: Within the past five hundred years, many erudite scholars and €c€ryas like J…va Gosv€m…, San€tana Gosv€m…, Vivan€tha Cakravart…, Vallabh€c€rya, and many other distinguished scholars even after the time of Lord Caitanya made elaborate commentaries on the Bh€gavatam. And the serious student would do well to attempt to go through them to better relish the transcendental messages. Sometimes Srila Prabhupada writes, that it is not only an option for those rasik devotees who really want, but even a MUST. This one quote of Srila Prabhupada I find the strongest one: SB 1.2.12 A sincere devotee must, therefore, be prepared to hear the Vedic literature like the Upaniads, Ved€nta and other literatures left by the previous authorities or Gosv€m…s, for the benefit of his progress. Without hearing such literatures, one cannot make actual progress. And without hearing and following the instructions, the show of devotional service becomes worthless and therefore a sort of disturbance in the path of devotional service. I am sure one could find many more...
