Of course there are many versions of the Monkey Magic. The one I used to watch is the version where a Japanese POP singer Ohba Kumiko used to play the role of Tripitaka. The main section of the story where the priest left China for India to bring back the scriptures going through a lot of trouble is based on a historical fact. The scriptures were not Vedic.
