Marriage without children

Krsna's Vedic system has many levels and are designed to suit the different

levels of consciousness of the people. His system can encompass and

gradually purify anyone if they follow the system. Even meat eating

materialists who are devoted to Kali in Krsna's Vedic system will bow down

to Lord Krsna in a Krsna temple. (Try getting a Christian or Muslim to do

that.) Similarly regarding the need for having children, there is a

karma-khanda reason for having children, but also as pointed out below a

transcendental reason for having children. It just depends at what level in

Krsna's Vedic system that we are at. Krsna's Vedic version is for Grhastas

to have children. For those on one level the reason may be more

self-interested for one's own benefit, that a son may help to uplift one

even after death (how many of us will be successful in going back to Godhead

in this life?), but for those on the transcendental level having a son is to

benefit the whole world. Bhaktivinode Thakura prayed to have a son who would

be a Ray of Visnu. If such persons didn't have progeny for the benefit of

the world where would the great Acaryas come from?

TRANSLATION

Or [if unsuccessful after long practice of yoga] he takes his birth in a

family of transcendentalists who are surely great in wisdom. Certainly, such

a birth is rare in this world.

PURPORT

Birth in a family of yogis or transcendentalists-those with great wisdom-is

praised herein because the child born in such a family receives a spiritual

impetus from the very beginning of his life. It is especially the case in

the acarya or gosvami families. Such families are very learned and devoted

by tradition and training, and thus they become spiritual masters. In India

there are many such acarya families, but they have now degenerated due to

insufficient education and training. By the grace of the Lord, there are

still families that foster transcendentalists generation after generation.

It is certainly very fortunate to take birth in such families. Fortunately,

both our spiritual master, Om Visnupada Sri Srimad Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati

Gosvami Maharaja, and our humble self had the opportunity to take birth in

such families, by the grace of the Lord, and both of us were trained in the

devotional service of the Lord from the very beginning of our lives. Later

on we met by the order of the transcendental system.
