Srivasa Pandit

(Disappearance day on 12th June)

Srivasa Pandit, fifth member of the Panca-tattava, Sri Krishna Caitanya, Prabhu

Nityananda, Sri Advaita, Gadadhara, Srivasadi, Gaura Bhakta Vrnda lived in

Navadvipa before the advent of Lord Caitanya. Srivasa lead his brothers Sri

Rama, Sri Nidhi and Sripati in their devotional lives of singing Krishna's

names, worshiping the Lord, and bathing thrice daily in Ganges. Meeting with

Sri Advaita Acarya Prabhu, they studied Bhagavatam and prayed for the

incarnation of the Supreme Lord. Why did they pray?

Because only an avatara of Krsna could reestablish Vaisnavism among the staunch

atheists, logicians and proud pandits harassing Nadia at that time.

Malini, wife of Srivasa, was a constant friend of Saci Devi. She served Nimai

as a nurse. When Lord Visvambhara appeared, the hearts of all the devotees were

filled with parental affection (vatsalya bhava). Gauracandra loved Malini and

Srivasa as a second mother and father. Srivasa Angam was located two hundred

yards north of Nimai's bari (house). Srivasa Pandit's palatial home had large

comfortable rooms, high protective boundary wall, and lush densely foliated

gardens and groves. Every night Sri Gauranga Mahaprabhu and His dearest friends

would enjoy ecstatic kirtana here and taste the mellows of Vrndavana. Here, the

raging Muslim Kazi broke the sacred mrdanga in his foolish attempt to stop Sri

Krishna's sankirtana movement. Hence forward Srivasa Angam was known as Khol

Banga Danga (place where the mrdanga was broken).

The Kazi passed an ordinance prohibiting sankirtana. Violators would be

converted to the Muslim faith and lose their property. Although most Nadia

vasis (residents of Navadvipa) panicked over this, Srivasa Pandit laughed at

the fanatical law. Within Srivasa Angam Lord Gauranga-sundara showed His divine

form to all His eternal associates. The house of Srivasa Pandit served as the

headquarters of Gauranga's sankirtana movement. The daily Bhagavatam classes,

nightly kirtans and many confidential Vraja pastimes of Lord Gaura Raya

occurred here. Srivasa Pandit and Advaita Acarya, the learned chiefs of

brahmana community, dedicated all their energy to the Lord's Hari-Nama

sankirtana movement. They surrendered their bodies, minds, homes, friends,

family and all possessions to Lord Gaura's service. They knew no other gods or

goddesses. Srivasa Pandit maintained his family, not because they were Sri

Caitanya's loving servants.

Çré Caitanya Mahäprabhu caused the dead son to speak about knowledge, and then

the two brothers personally became the sons of Çréväsa Öhäkura.

PURPORT

This incident is described as follows by Çréla Bhaktivinoda Öhäkura in his

Amåta-praväha-bhäñya. One night while Çré Caitanya Mahäprabhu was dancing with

His devotees at the house of Çréväsa Öhäkura, one of Çréväsa Öhäkura's sons,

who was suffering from some disease, died. Çréväsa Öhäkura was so patient,

however, that he did not allow anyone to express sorrow by crying, for he did

not want the kértana going on at his house to be disturbed. Thus kértana

continued without a sound of lamentation. But when the kértana was over,

Caitanya Mahäprabhu, who could understand the incident, declared, "There must

have been some calamity in this house." When He was then informed about the

death of Çréväsa Öhäkura's son, He expressed His regret, saying, "Why was this

news not given to Me before?" He went to the place where the son was lying dead

and asked him, "My dear boy, why are you leaving the house of Çréväsa Öhäkura?"

The dead son immediately replied, "I was living in this house as long as I was

destined to live here. Now that the time is over, I am going elsewhere,

according to Your direction. I am Your eternal servant, a dependent living

being. I must act only according to Your desire. Beyond Your desire, I cannot

do anything. I have no such power." Hearing these words of the dead son, all

the members of Çréväsa Öhäkura's family received transcendental knowledge. Thus

there was no cause for lamentation. This transcendental knowledge is described

in the Bhagavad-gétä (2.13): tathä dehäntara-präptir dhéras tatra na muhyati.

When someone dies, he accepts another body; therefore sober persons do not

lament. After the discourse between the dead boy and Çré Caitanya Mahäprabhu,

funeral ceremonies were performed, and Lord Caitanya assured Çréväsa Öhäkura,

"You have lost one son, but Nityänanda Prabhu and I are your eternal sons. We

shall never be able to give up your company." This is an instance of a

transcendental relationship with Kåñëa. We have eternal transcendental

relationships with Kåñëa as His servants, friends, fathers, sons or conjugal

lovers. When the same relationships are pervertedly reflected in this material

world, we have relationships as the sons, fathers, friends, lovers, masters or

servants of others, but all these relationships are subject to termination

within a definite period. If we revive our relationship with Kåñëa, however, by

the grace of Çré Caitanya Mahäprabhu our eternal relationship will never break

to cause our lamentation.

Srivasa Pandit represents the marginal living entity (tatastha jiva). The

devotees headed by Srivasa are described as Lord Caitanya's smaller limbs (His

face, eyes, disc, other weapons) They all took part in Sri Gaurasundara's

pastimes. With them Lord Gauranga spread the sankirtana movement. Srivasa

Pandit is Narada Muni, an inter-galactic preacher and constant associate of the

Lord. His samadhi is in the 64-samadhi area in Vrndavana.
