It is a sin to not observe Janmastami and this is confirmed in the Hari Bhakti Vilasa. By eating on Jayanti one commits a sin equal to the sin of eating a sudras food or eating the food in the hand of a corpse.(spoken by Lord Brahma to Narada Muni,from the Visnu Rahasya) A person who eats on Janamastami day commit the sin of eating flesh of a vulture,heron crow,or hawk,or the flesh of a human being. O best of brahmanas one who eats on Janmastami day commits all the sins in the three worlds.Of this there is no doubt. A person who fills his belly in the Jayanti day is trotured by the messengers of Yamaharaja,They will not allow him to eat anything more than a single sesamum seed. A person that eats on Lord Krsnas holy day pushes into a horribel hell a hundred and one generations of his relatives past and yet to come. these are all quotes from Hari Bhakti Vilasa,however there is so much benefit to observe the Janmastami celebration and fast. O delight of the Kurus by once fasting during Janamastami a person becomes free from the sins of seven births .Of this there is no doubt. His descendants are righteous .He attains health and peerless good fortune.He becomes devoted to truth and religion,and when he dies he goes to Vaikuntha. A country where the day of My birth is always shown in pictures and annointed with sandal paste becomes beautiful with all the ornaments of spiritual life.it becomes a great festival.It is worshiped by all. In the country (where janmastami is observed) there is no fear and no plagues or other calamities.There the rain falls as much as could be desired. All opulences come to a home where My pastimes with Devaki are worshiped ..Fearful diseases and other calamities can never enter there. In that home there is no fear of bulls ,a mongoose ,snakes ,tigers,sinful diseases,sins,thieves ,or the king. A person who fasts on that day become freed from the greatest sins. There is so many verses gloryfying Janmastami,and we should not be minimizing the verses that tells about the negative result of not observing Janmastami.Just like by eating grains on Ekadasi one is eating all sin similarly the result on eating on Janmastami is negative. However if one for some reason misses a Janmastami ,which should be most unlikely for a follower of Lord Caitanya and Srila Prabhupada,one just observe Janmastami strictly next year.And from the age of 8 children should also observe this fast according to scripture.
