Gaya got its name after the Gayasura.He was not an ordinary demon,but a devotee in a demons body.He performed austerities and got a benediction that anyone that performed sacrifice on his body would later enter Vaikuntha.So the sages and demigods asked the Gayademon to lie down and they placed a big slap of stone on top of the demon,and started doing Yajna.However the demon had not in mind to stay there forever and wanted to get up after some long time period had passed.However this was not approved by the sages and demigods,and they prayed to the Lord to stop the asura from getting up.Lord Visnu put His one lotusfood down on the stone and pressed His lotusfood down so hard the Gayademon gave up his body.Thus he also went back to Godhead,thus there still is the lotusimpression of the Lord Food.And everyday this Lotusfood of the Lord is worshipped and it is very beautifull.I made the trip with a devotee friend.Thus anyone that does sraddha cermony at this place liberates his anscestors.That is the benediction.This food of lord Visnu is also known as "Visnupada".
